Sputnik 1 was 58 cm in diameter or 1.9 feet from each edge, that sounds like a basketball to me.

Sputkink 2 was a 4 meter high cone-shaped capsule with a base diameter of 2 meters.

Sputnik 40 was a 1/4 scale model of Sputnik 1 l"aunched from the Mir space station on 3 November 1997 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Sputnik 1. Its appearance resembled Sputnik I. Its batteries expired on 29 December 1997 and the VHF transmitter fell silent."

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sputnik_1
"The satellite weighed about 83 kg (184 pounds). The Sputnik 1 satellite was a 58.0 cm-diameter aluminum sphere that carried four whip-like antennas that were 2.4-2.9 m long. The antennas looked like long "whiskers" pointing to one side. It had two radio transmitters (20 and 40 MHz) and is believed to have orbited Earth at a height of about 250 km (150 miles)."

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sputnik_2
"Sputnik 2 (Russian: Спутник-2, Satellite 2) was the second spacecraft launched into Earth orbit, on November 3, 1957, and the first to carry a living animal - a dog. It was a 4 meter high cone-shaped capsule with a base diameter of 2 meters."

The Sputnik series was a successful program with a pretty long history. Sputnik 2 and beyond could easily contain a nuclear weapon and its guidance equipment, which is what made it such a great threat to the United States.
