I've never travelled with a group. You get to see only what your guide wants you to see. I travel by myself and go where I please, spend as much time as I want to at any place...visit it more than once if I wish...it is so much more fun. But do make sure you do enough research before you visit a place, if you're on a tight schedule. Books like Lonely Planet are immensely useful, and so as local books and the internet.

i've done and enjoyed both avenues. when it's somewhere that i can do the research myself - it's wonderful with your own, however when it's a large country and foreign to boot - i recommend a good tour. traveled all over the US with friends or family andhad a wonderful time. did Rome on our own too but went in with a group for the better rates and Vatican visit. this way we got to see what WE wanted to see and with all the books -- made my own tours and saw things off the beaten path that others after were saying - i didn't know that was there.
traveled toPoland with a group and stayed with the group the majority of the time. our guide was outstanding and took us to the key spots and back areas you'd not normally have gotten to visit on your own or with any other tour!

Both have their pros and contras.
If you choose the tour one the good thing is that everything is already programed, times, food, places to visit, where to stay, etc. what i don't like about it is that you don't have the enough freedom to stay more time in one place or go to other when you want.
If you go by your self you should be more experienced, have traveled more and know more things about the place that you re visiting. take care of schedule plan very well before you go.

Personally i prefer the second one because i like to have more time space and decide what to do, when and were. To I like it more 'cause i learn more of the place by my self asking or reading than with a guide.

It's good too to have an partner that have similar interests...

It depends, where are you going? Third-world countries, tour guide only.
