Consider this - your sponse is on their death bed and have only a very short time left. You are with them and they ask one last question. "Honey, you know how important truth and fidelity are to me. Tell me, please - Have you ever been unfaithful to me?"

Now, unfortunately, the truth is "yes" so what do you say?

You say no. Anyone who would say different is a pompous, unfeeling, self-important twit.

Nothing is gained by admitting to an earlier transgression. The only thing that happens is an increase in suffering in the world. The absolutists regarding ethics fail to take into account that their words can inflict pain worse than the act of infidelity.

That's not a case of telling a lie, its living a lie. It has already been a lie for a long time and this is one last chance to make things right between you and the one you cheated and also God. I'll take an honest answer over a lie which is 2 wrongs instead of one.

You lie, of course. What is to be gained by telling the truth at this point?

Why should you answer differently than if the question had been posed over morning coffee? Are ethics dependent upon a terminal point beyond which they might not be applicable? Had I been unfaithful, I would answer "yes": but then again, had I desired to be unfaithful, I would have been divorced already.

And the question presumes that your answer is dependent upon having one last chance to save yourself, not the other person...

Tell the truth. Do not lie. Lying is never ever okay so says the Lord. As a side note: he's going to die anyway.

Tell the truth. Otherwise they wouldn't have asked.

If yes is the truth, then ask for their forgiveness.
