empty or something. It kind of sucks and I get tired of feeling that way, but once I eat something sweet, I feel better, but I feel like I gave in and ruined my progress. How do you avoid eating sweet good things but not feel like crap?

You can't avoid eating sweet things forever. Eat fruit when you want something sweet.

Why?
Your body naturally seeks out sweets and sugar as it attempts to regulate and tell you what it needs and what is good for it.
However this "sweet" feeling is something that modern food manufacturers take advantage of first with sugar and later with the more dangerous high fructose corn syrup. manufacturers seek to take advantage of our desire to seek out fruits which have natural sugar and are good for you as they provide other nutrients as well.

Also a good way to stay on a diet as you have already become addicted to unnatural sugars like every other person in the world. Is to set a "cheat day" one day a week eat whatever you want.

Deprevation diets don't work, they set themselves up for failure. the key is moderation. if you have a sugary dessert once a week or have a dessert once every two days it isn't so bad. the key is limiting it to those set times.

Also allowing yourself to have these "treats" occasionally can be looked forward to as a reward for eating healthy all the other times. The key is to limit them to specific times to look forward to and not exceed that.

The above comment also touched on something important. Smoothies. Smoothies are a VERY good way to give yourself a sweet treat and also eat very healthy as well. You can add just about anything to a smoothie and it will taste good.

I add extra nutrients to mine by adding plain whey powder (whey is a great source of protien found only in ricotta cheese and I don't like ricotta cheese) and flaxeed powder (omega 3 fatty acids you get from fish, I can't eat fish). Plain (unflavored) yogurt and skim milk is a good thing to add as well. Don't use fruit juices as most pre-packaged juices have added sugar that you don't need. (OJ is NOT good for you unless it is freshly squeezed)

Also oatmeal is a great thing to add (IMO uncooked quaker oats works best)- you don't taste it.

If you get a veggie juicer you can also add veggies to your smoothie.

Be carefull of pre-made smoothies as they tend to have lots of added sugar. Jamba juice I believe has no more than two smoothies that are actually not so bad for you. Even ones on thier "health" menu have added sugar.

The others have made some good suggestions but you might also just try switching your sweets from a candy bar or ice cream to a banana or an apple.

You can make an excellent smoothie from nothing but fresh fruit. Throw pineapple, banana, strawberries, blueberries and apples in a blender with some ice and voila, you have an excellent all natural, naturally sweet drink.

Hey:

Feeling like crap is part of the withdrawal process. Sugary foods have been linked to the release of Serotonin (a 'feel good' chemical) in the brain. Especially in certain people.

Whenever you make a dietary change, it will take some time for your body to adapt to what's going on. The cravings will pass, and you'll start to feel better consuming healthier foods.

It won't be easy. It will be worth it.

Replace the refined sugar in your diet (candy, cookies, etc.) with natural sugar from fruit. Your body needs some sugar to stay healthy, stick with simple sugars!
