I had a beagle dog and she was a great family dog and got along well with my cats and my other dog. She was never a good watch dog she liked people to much and just wagged her tail when somebody came into the house or knocked on the door.
The only thing is beagles love to run they really need a big yard to play in and not be locked in the house all day long.
My dog if it got loose outside you couldnt catch her and she would run all over the neighborhood. One day my little boy let her out by accident and that was the last time she got hit by a car because she wouldnt come to me when I called her.
So make sure if you live on a busy street with lots of traffic you have a fence or before somebody opens the door up you have her or him with you so they dont run out on you .
Have fun if that is what you get they are cute little dogs !!

Watch dog, well not really. Temperament depends on the dog some are so needy in the loving department then there are the leave me alone and let me roam type. They need very high activity levels so I would say have lots of room for them(fenced room) if they get a whiff of something they will be gone. They will probably be gone if they get out any how. Also to think about is that most of them are loud. Their howl sounds like you are killing them so if you have close neighbors, beware. They love to Howell . Other wise their fabulous things to have around.

They're not the smartest (or dumbest) breed out there. Just don't expect them to be rocket scientists.
They LOVE to roam. They try to get away and can go miles.
They also love to howl instead of bark. And their howl is the kind that can shake closed windows.
I'm not sure they're my first choice for a watchdog. Most dogs will react when they hear sounds outside, but a good watchdog should be smart enough to be able to tell a harmless noise (like a kitty) from a danger noise (like a person trying a door). They're also not very intimidating to an intruder.

Beagles are hunted in packs, (rabbit hunters) so they would much rather be with a bunch of dogs than be alone. While they can sound a darn good alarm (covers ears) they would hold the ladder for a burglar.

Beagles are wonderful little dogs who get along with everyone. They will get along with other dogs because they are hounds, and were bred to hunt and live in packs. They are great with kids, and will get along with most other animals if they are introduced to them as puppies. They will bark at noises ,etc.,but don't count on them biting anyone.
