Im not really sure how to help you on this. I never have trained on newspapers and never will. The only reason is if later on he gets trained outside and sees a paper laying on the floor he will think its okay to go on it and I dont want that.

Me personally , I would put her little dog in a cage at nights till you get him potty trained just big enough for him to sleep in . Dogs never wet or poop where they sleep. Or you can do what I do. I shortleash him to my bed where he only has a certain amount of movement., that has worked to for me. My little puppy hasnt wet on the floor at all doing that way.

Don't train your puppy to go on newspaper, you are just showing him that it is OK to go in the house. You want to train him to go outside. He is old enough to hold it for at least 8 hours. Use a crate. Get a crate just big enough for him to stand up, turn around, lay down, not big enough for him to potty at one end and go to the other end. Dogs will not sit or lay in their waste. Keep him in the crate when you are gone, or sleeping. He will get used to the crate, many dogs come to like them and go in of their own free will. This truly is not cruel. When the dog is out of the crate, pay attention to him. He will sniff around and circle when he has to go, then get him outside as quick as you can and praise him when he goes outside. Dogs will almost always go 30 to 45 minutes after eating. This all works much better than paper as what you want is a dog that goes outside. Most important, do not punish him when he goes inside. Just take him out. Dogs do not know why they are being punished.

Punishing is the worst thing you can do. There is no way for the dog to understand that the punishment is for going on the carpet. How does he know he won't get punished for going on the paper?

You have several things you need to do. First pick up his water dish 2 hours before you go to bed. Then take him out to go pee just before you go to bed. Praise him tremendously for even an attempt to pee outside. If he messes up inside, just clean it up and then take him outside. Same thing again, praise for an attempt. It takes time. Positive reinforcement goes a lot further than negative.

Have you thought about going to puppy training with him?

Put him in the crate at night. He more then likely will not pee in there. Then get up in the morning and immediately take him outside. And praise him when he pees out there. Carry him if you can, I had dogs that got so excited, that they could not control their bladder when trying to get outside.

He should be trained in no time.

put him in a crate with newspaper in it for the night til he gets better for about a month then let him out...or every time he has to pee take him in your room and put him on the newspaper and sooner or later he'll go there by himself

CRATE TRAIN HIM. This is the most efficient way to house break your puppy as he doesn't want to soil his bed area.
