The parts of the movie are supposedly true but you know how Hollywood is....they exagerate things.

It's not based on a true story. Tobe Hooper said he got the idea while shopping and saw a rack of chainsaws, but Ed Gein did influence one of the characters in his movie. Guess which one?

The original movie was loosely based on a murderer named Ed Gein. Incidents in the movie were largely from the imagination of the director and writers. But if they were to base movie on what Ed Gein actually did, it would be just as scary, no he didn't use a chainsaw to kill his victims.

they say it's based on a true story so yes, the texas chainsaw massacre really did happen, they never sentenced anyone for it though because the man they had arrested, died in prison so was never actually tried for the crimes but the way the picture depicts it... it probably didn't actually happen that way.

not 100%. Some of it is based on a real serial killer, but the movie is largely fictional
