So my office mate asked me for my opinion and I am really stuck. So she has been asking her 16 yr old step daughter to go job hunting for the 5th time now, and everytime she has blown her off. So this last time she was complaining that her stomach hurt and she didnt feel good. So after her parents fell asleep she snuck out to her 18 yr old bfs house and spent the night. So we are trying to think of a suitable punishment for her, we have come up with either grounding her until school starts (thru the weekend), grounding her until she finds a job, or call her real mom and find out what punishment she sees as fit. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You have to figure out what means the most to her. Minimum would be until she gets a job for me. If she has a car, or car privileges, take them away. She doesn't need it unless she has a job. If it's computer time, take that away, there is no free time when she is job hunting. I'm the mother of a 15-year-old girl, and that's what I would do.

Ahhh, go the rebellious teenagers! It's a headache. It seems a cruel and neglectful choice, but all people are individuals who need to find themselves, and often learn the hard way...it's hard when you care for someone and don't want to see them go down the wrong path, or make the same mistakes you did at their age (and its always easier to see someone else's problems over your own). It's tough love my dear, but as long as your friend can be there with open arms when she comes running back after realising the real world ain't as easy as it seems to a 16yr old - its a struggle, but part of the parenting package. Good luck :)

Definitely let her mom know. Let's see when I got caught sneaking out I was grounded for about 1 month (1st offense) and if I didn't come home after school or left the house for any reason without permission they tacked on another couple of days. I learned that he (the boy) was not as important as my freedom.

Grounding to find AND keep the job. This should mean no computer, TV or phone, etc..

Since she is staying with you, you have all the right and responsibility to discipline her. Ground her til she finds a job.

Ground her till she either gets a job or school starts again. Whichever comes first.
