A marathon is 26 miles. Many groups sponsor local runs that vary in distance (usually 3, 5 or 10K). A K is a kilometer and that is 1000 meters. Shorter than a mile. A good guideline to follow would be to start out small, and go from there.

26.2 miles.
It was originally just 26 miles until some king/royal family was about one fifth of a mile away from the finish line so they moved the finish line up so that the royalty(ies) could see the exact finish, I also think they ruled on any ties because of their view from there on.
