The oscillating electric field in the microwave will induce currents inside any conductive object. Microwave an AOL free trial CD (or any other CD you don't care about) for 5 seconds (label side up) and see what happens.
With a fork I would expect lots of sparks, and I imagine the fork will get very hot. The metallic object also poses a big risk. When the electrons are excited by a microwave, they can de-excite by re-emitting it. Thus metallic objects can act as microwave-mirrors. Reflecting the microwaves back to the magnetron can cause permanent damage, or possibly even a fire.

I have to admit I've done it with both a metal fork & a plastic fork =(
A metal forks starts sparking & popping and making all kinds of god awful sounds! It's horrible. The plastic fork just melts =/
