Hi skorpio! Yes you are right! What did people do then? They lived with it, and no pills. Although I think life in the olden days was not as stressful. Now adays a mother has to go to work to afford to have a home, back in the olden days it just took a mans wage to pay the bills. Life has situational stressers, that might cause you to be depressed and of course you have the chemical inbalances, which needs to be treated by meds. Now adays there is so much crime, evil and wars. These things usually devistate people. There is so much sexual, physical and mental abuse inacted on children, that doesn't help. Usually children don't get the help they need until later on in life, when they have a major break down. If you need to take a med for a problem, then do so if it helps you. Take Care! Hugs! von

I take them myself. And if you need them don't feel bad. Your not depending on pills to live. You need certain nutrients in food to function, and sometimes because of a chemical imbalance (which like you said is not very uncommen. And the reason for so many now a days is because of all the new research to better diagnose the problem) or trauma in your life. I beleive I have both. Chemical imbalance and I had a nervous breakdown last year. And no offense to Valerie who answered this question but... You DO NEED to take them contiuously. Otherwise it can make you worse. When you take an antibiotic you can't take it on and off. It won't help. Your body needs the constant balance to work properly. And not all drugs are addictive. They have come along way with medication. Ask your doctor. If the script you r on is an addictive one I'm sure he/she will put you on something different if you really want. Otherwise because they're are so many different meds out there, they put you on that particular script for a reason.
ALSO WANT TO ADD...
This doesn't make you a pill popper. Pill poppers are people who take pills, one or several, like drugs. They over due them and do it to feel high or "numb" themselves.

Back in the days if they were depressed they didnt servive. The whole scientific reasoning behind the chemical imbalance is far from the truth, its only an excuse to take these pills. They are not and never will be a solution to depression or anxiety. These pills dont balance your bodys "chemicals" if anything they overload your system with "chemicals" that dont allow you to feel anything that is real. You have to realize that your not going to be happy 100% of the time, no one is. People who suffer from depression consume themselves with to many negative thoughts that then determine thier actions that then detirmine how they feel. I know sometimes things seem like they are hard to deal with, but taking a pill doesnt solve it any better than having a couple of drinks. It may numb the pain but can you really do it forever? I would say take um if you feel you need to, but dont expect that alone to solve everything. There are deeper issues that can only be resoved in your mind, not in a pill.

Depression can be cured. Medication for depression is not a good idea because you will be so dependent with this medicine. It will only worsen your situation. Try treating your depression thru naturopathic medicne. My friend had depression and spent a lot of money ($20K) and time(2 years) for treatment that did not work. She consulted a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) and less than 30 days, she is perfectly okay and not taking any medication for depression ever since. The ND's site is www.design2heal.com . It is worth trying. Tell your friend and love ones about this site. You might save a life by passing this info.

Believe me I used to feel the same way about "pill poppers" until I myself had to become one even though I only take one aday thank God! But the way I see it is if it keeps you from being compulsive, suicidal, very tearful, and etc... I think it is well worth it.People don't understand that having good mental health is as crucial as having good physical health. I unfortunatly had a horrible case of post partum depression which can last up to a whole year but I decided to suck up my pride and go to my doctor and I'm telling you I'm glad I did because I was on the verge of killing myself because I at that point couldn't even cope with simple everyday life. I almost lost my marriage along with other relationships but I can say now that I'm on my meds I feel so much better now I actually feel normal again! As far as what people did back in the day I think they just stayed miserable according to my mother who suffered a deep depression from the time she got married at 18. Yes, its sad that this is what it has all came to that you have to take a pill to feel normal but sometimes we just have to do things we don't like and get over it. If you ask me I think it makes it easier on everyone in the household when someone with problems go on meds because life in my house has approved 100% because of me being on my meds my husband and I both are so much happier.

Be careful....you might become addicted to them...but pills do help only when they are taken from time to time not continuously....
It's common nowdays because society puts sp much more pressure on people now. We need to live a certian lifestyle, we want this, we want that, we have to accomplish this or that......things that were not important before. The world has become so vane in everthing. During the old days, you would find your parents available, a friend to talk to etc. but now, everybody is busy and don't have time although technology has dramastically changed : we have the net, cell phone , we are distance away from people etc.
The best thing from my poing fo view to do is to find somebody to talk to....But just don't solely relie on pills.
Good luck.

I've been off paxil since may and there have been many benefits - try not to stay on it more than a few months - maybe to get you well into your next big life transition like a new job or something big and stressfull and hard like that. I have taken all kinds of drugs for different purposes and they have benefitted me alot - they all have a purpose. Get you through things - make you money - help you put up with all the BS that is around you and may be getting to you - a little pain free liviing for a while - sounds good to me - I do it all the time

Dont feel bad about it, its about you. It will probably help you find a way arounf the depressions etc.. since now you experience that there is another way of seeing life and yourself so you learn the signals of depression etc..
Just go for it for a while but keep alert, there are thousands of different pills so if one gives side affects after a while just switch and stop once a while (consut your doctor etc..) to see how you stand ok?

I am on anti-depressants because of an insufficient amount of the chemical called seratonin that my body produces to keep me in happy spirits. I have been on anti-depressants since 1997. I view it as necessary just like a diabetic views insulin as being
necessary. When you view it this way, it makes sense. You should really not fight it. Talk to your doctor. If you don't agree with your doctor, talk to a different doctor. Also, go to
www.WEBMD.com and enter "antidepressants" or "depression"
CNN reports that 40% of the American population is on anti-
depressants. So, you are not alone
