My dog and cat have never been left alone and I am hiring a pet sitter for an upcoming weekend. I am interviewing three. What should I ask them? Should I go with someone who will stay overnight in the house with them? Or, just someone who comes several times a day? What are some lessons learned from your experiences? What should I look for? What should I watch out for?

Go to www.petsit.com - the web site for Pet Sitters International. They have a checklist of things to look for when hiring someone.

I am more reluctant to leave a dog alone overnight than a cat, but if your dog can handle it, it should be okay if it's just a couple nights. If you hire someone who will keep the pets at their place, make sure to see the place first. Is it clean? Is it safe? Are there any places where your dog would be able to escape the yard (if applicable)? Will it just be your animals? If there are other animals, will they get along with yours? Will they even be permitted to interact with yours?

I have a dog and had someone stay in the house with him. I knew that person well enough though to trust in my house (not to steal, give parties, etc...). I like the idea that they're in the house in case the pet is sick or someone breaks in or there's a fire.
You want references, absolutely. And you interview the references astutely to see that the pet sitter did pet sit for them, and is not their nephew/niece... Look for how the petsitter interacts with your pet. Ask whether they grew up with pets. Give instructions, but deliberately leave out some important ones to see if the sitter will ask about it. Like how often your pets go out, where they like to sleep, how active they are, if there are places they're not allowed to go. The sitter should ask these questions if you don't offer instructions, and that will show you that they know their job.

If it their first time on their own go for an over-nighter.

1) You should ask how much experience because a lot of them only go for that sort of job because they think it's 'easy money'.

2) If they have animals of their own because if they don't how will they cope with ones they've never even met before.

3) If you can get a friend or relative to check in on them sometime during the weekend to make that everything is OK.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Hmmm... we continually have friends or relations watch our pets.... circuitously letting a complete stranger wander round my homestead even as i'm lengthy gone supplies me the heeby-jeebies... Questions that come to options (in no particular order).... a million. Names and telephone numbers of references 2. call and telephone type of employer 3. criminal historic previous 4. Are they bonded or insured? 5. Are they prepared to dirt as they snoop round your homestead? i imagine i'd favor a puppy sitter that develop into recommended to me through a vet or a pal fairly than a complete stranger. in fact, i'd probable fairly pay someone from the vet's place of work to puppy-sit down earlier i'd use a stranger ... even with the indisputable fact that it quite is in simple terms me. Have an exceedingly good time on your vacation, through ways.
