My hard drive and new install of windows XP is about 5-6 months old..System has worked fine and trouble free. Now this morning Windows does not load. It just keeps trying to boot(or load) and then starts the process over all by it self. It also will not boot in safe mode. I still have the XP disk.
Is this a virus or a problem in the boot record. Can u boot from the disk?? I really hate to lose the stuff on the hard drive and wipe it clean and then re-install.. How about installing a small 2nd hard drive and loading XP on that. Then use my current drive as storage???

Please WIFE MAD!! Can anyone help??

How aggressively you want to attack this problem depends on the need to recover the original operating system. If you have all the program installation disks and do not mind reinstalling the programs and windows updates, a clean XP install on a different disk is a very good solution. Otherwise you will need to boot from a CD that includes file management support and identify what is causing the system to crash. Sometimes you can find and fix the issue but often will entail a lot more work and in depth investigation, than a fresh XP install.

You poor guy. Have you been updating Windows as regularly as you should? There have been some important fixes recently. I would definitely suggest putting in your boot disk and trying to boot in safe mode from there. Run a virus scan as soon as you have the ability.

I had this problem once. My case turned out to be faulty hardware, the video card had blown. Try taking the comp to a repairers. Your idea of keeping the hard drive for storage works fine, at the very least you would be sure it was just the hard drive at fault.
