the North Pole is not a state, not even a country.
Mexico,Japan, China and Italy are countries, not states.
That leaves 2 actual states, and of these 2 new york is much
further from the equator

Since Mexico, Japan, China and Italy are countries, your only two options are Texas and New York. Even the most cursory of glances at an atlas will reveal that New York is further north than Texas and therefore is furthest away from the equator.
