Yes, they can but if you're asking this because you get headaches you should know that headaches are also caused by things other than CVAs (cardiovascular accidents, brain attack, e.g. "strokes"). Strokes are often caused by bleeds. The bleeds can be a result of skull fracture, ruptured aneurysms (hemorrhagic stroke) and blunt head trauma. Strokes can also be cause by blood clots blocking blood flow to the brain. So, not only bleeding but a lack of blood can cause a stroke. The intensity of the headache depends on the cause and severity of the stroke. With CVA there will be other symptoms along with headache and not headache by itself or no headache at all.

And I think that "bmac" meant strokes can be preceeded by, not precipitated by.

If you had a stroke then you wouldn't need to worry about headaches, you would be paralyzed in your whole or part of your body to be able to have a headache.

A stroke can be precipitated by the WORST headache you've ever had. If you have that, blurred vision, one-sided numbness or weakness, go to the ER immediately.

Actually, women who suffer from migranes are a pre-cursor to brain tumors later on in life. It can also be a pre-cursor to strokes too.

Remember, there has to be a genetic link too... somebody in the family had it, etc.
