People play American football with their feet all the time.

To answer your question though, American football is called as such because it's evolved over time from association football, which was developed in English colleges then in athletic clubs. Early on American colleges played what was essentially soccer then over time developed new rules and rule changes to suit their liking that flattened the ball and allowed players to carry the ball in their arms. It eventually got to the point where it could be considered a different sport but kept the "football" name.

American football has evolved over the past century. It was originally referred to as Gridiron Football. (probably because of how the playing field was marked).

It is definitely different than soccer.

Because it is played on foot - as opposed to on horseback or in a vehicle or in a pool.

Actually, that's not quite right. It's called football because it resembled a number of Scottish and Irish and Welsh games that were already called football -- games that more closely modern rugby than "association football"/soccer.

Soccer is the real football. American football is a variation of the sport rugby. I don't see why they want the name "football".
