I think the first person to reach the door should open it for whoever is next. Similarly, each person going through the door should not allow the door to shut in the face of another. This is simple manners and nothing to do with equality. As a bloke, if I'm with a woman I make sure I get to the door first, unless my companion seems to be making an effort to do just that.

I think opening a door for someone is a sign of thoughfulness and respect. However, I don't see a need for a man to go out of his way to open a door for a woman if it's completely inconvenient for him and wouldn't be such a big deal for her. For example, if a man is behind me as I'm walking towards a building, I don't wait for him to overtake me and hold the door for me so I can walk in. I usually open the door and then hold it open for him. Everyone should show thoughtfulness for everyone else, regardless of gender.

It's not required. It's a kind act on the part of the man, so if both are on the way into a bank, restaurant, or anywhere there is a line, the woman should then let the man take the place in line in front of her, since that's where he would have been if he hadn't stopped to hold the door. Some women don't seem to realize this.

Depends on if it's a date or not....if it's just a friend she can open her own door. Now if it's a door going in or out of a building (such as a store), I usually always hold it open for a woman.

Good manners dictate that anybody should hold open a door for another person if doing so would be helpful. I don't think the gender issue matters so much anymore though. Saying that though, some men (mainly elderly ones) do seem to get a bit offended if, as a young female, you say "after you". Strange, I thought I was being polite!

Yes. But I think it goes further than that. Opening a door is a symbol showing respect for another. It shows a willingness to in some small way be of assistance and make another person's life easier. So, yes I open doors for women but I make it a practice to open doors for anyone who is nearby as I enter a building. It demonstrates respect and a servant heart in just a little action.

It is so very sad that men in this day and age do not know about chivalry. Yes it is always polite to open the door for a woman. She will know that you respect her and will think higher of you if you do little things like this for her. A woman does not want a man to open the door for her because she is conceited, but because it makes her feel special, and sometimes men don't realize that some doors are really heavy.

Yes. Although some women want to be independant of men's help in anything they can do for themselves, I feel that it is a sweet, old fashioned custom that is still greatly appreciated today. I have 2 boys, 13 and 19, and I taught them this since they were strong enough to hold a door. It comes automatically to them and they get smiles, nods, and expressions of grattitude almost every time they do it. It is a pleasant thing, so why not? I respect and appreciate a man or boy who holds the door for me, and I'm a tough, independant chick!

maintaining the door open for an alluring lady to bypass via is probably going considered one of the small pleasures in existence. For the sake of being a gentleman, I carry doors open for any females. i don't even enable my spouse to hold paying for bags if i'm around.

I don't know about "should" but I do.Some women look at me I'm doing something bad. There are some gentlemen left out there, just because we're nice doesn't mean we are up to anything. Just because I open a door for a woman doesn't mean I want in her pants.Have a nice day!
