I don't know what most people mean, so I won't speak for them. When I say witch, I mean a practitioner of the Wiccan religion.

Witches practice witchcraft.

"Witch" refers to both male and female practitioners of witchcraft.

Witches may or may not be followers of the Wiccan religion.

There are other religions and philosophies whose followers practice magic, and they may also be referred to as "witches".

They are sometimes referring to people who practice earth centered religions; pagans or wiccans.

I have known pagans and wiccans who did not mind being called a witch because of the power it denotes.

I have also known pagans and wiccans who utterly deplore the word because of the negative connotations in our society.

those who practice the Ancient Ways referred to as Witchcraft. these practitioners didn't worship Satan but worshiped in a different manner than the accepted Christian Religion as they were more God/Goddess Based. they also learned the uses of plants, herbs and other means to help heal the sick along with being midwives in helping deliver children. they were considered by many to be the forefathers of modern medicine.

"witches" ok, now God created us all. Some people have certain mental powers or foresight. Today they are called psychics~ in the "burning" days, they were misunderstood, and society couldn't explain it so they annihilated them cruelly. The stereo types, broomsticks and black cats, I think are the man made parts of their stories. But I do believe men once upon a time couldn't understand them, control them, so let's burn them. But conversely, there probably were evil women capable of inflicting pain or willing it on people that persecuted them so perhaps it was bittersweet. But research and learning is how we attain understanding.
