All you can do is thoroughly look through your dogs hair. The best place to see them is on the belly where the hair is the thinnest. Also, look for flea dirt, which sort of looks like coffee grounds. If your're still unsure, take your dog to the vet.
If you find any, go to your veterinarian and purchase Frontline, or whatever flea preventative they recommend. DO NOT use something from the store, even a pet store, only use products recommended by your vet. These are much safer and work better than the stuff from the store.

Fleas leave behind little black specks, called flea dirt. If you run a flea comb (available at the pet store) through your dog's hair, you may pick up live ones also. Fleas need to be treated twice. The best product comes from your vet. It is a liquid applied to the skin near the top of the neck. It scatters across the surface of the dog's skin kind of like a drop of oil in water. The first application kills all live fleas but will not kill eggs. 30 days later, you need to treat again to kill anything else which hatched.

You should be able to see dog fleas. They are usually pretty noticeable. If you can't find the flea, their poop looks like little black specks.

Look for them. You can see a flea usually, but you really have to look. Also, they leave dirt (flea poop), just little black specks.

Because they are scratching and fleas will invariably jump off the dog and on to you, so when you get bit, YOU'LL KNOW.

You'll see them give your dog a good check just run your fingers through the fur and if you see one pick it off don't flick it it will come back squish them drown or burn (ticks to but w/ tick you have to make sure you got the head out or it will keep drinking)
