I am building a new house and need help picking colors. The only thing I am decided on is our bedroom will be a dark gray my husband work nights so we need something to make the room darker. I am at a loss on the rest of the house I am seeing alot of tans but I don't think I really want tan. What are the alternatives? Does the whole house need to blend? It is 2 story kids rooms upstairs. Please help.

Get to the Painting Dept. in either Lowe's or Home Depot. They can so u many selections. I am not sure why u must paint your bedroom dark b/c your husband works at night. U can have heavy curtains, with blinds to block out the sun for him to sleep. Of course u don't have to paint the room white but u have many dark colors in any family group. Still no direction look at design shows on HG TV. Get on line to the websites also. They can help. Get magazines like Woman's Day or Design Mags that have pic on different rooms in the house. U go with what u like. Its no use to get a white kitchen if u don't feel it no matter what the trend is. (White kitchens is not the trend but u get the idea). Make your house a home for u and your fam. Good luck and congrats on the new home.

The colour scheme from room to room only has to blend when the rooms or areas are visible from each other. Meaning, if you have an open concept first floor, yes the colours should all work well together. Bedrooms, washrooms and other areas not openly visible can have a decor all of their own.
A good rule of thumb for open areas is what I call the "rule of 3's". Choose three colours and use those same 3 colours in different ratios throughout the areas that are visible to each other. So as an example, if your living room is a soft green-blue with some brown and splashes of light green, your kitchen and dining area can have the same colours but with the accent colours as the predominant colours. You can vary the shades slightly from one room to the next. Not only does this make the whole colour selection process so much easier, but it also allows you to use certain items in one room one day and in another the next because everything matches quite nicely. Neutrals like white and off-white can still be used without counting as a colour, but try to stick with the same neutral shade throughout so as not to create a break in the visual flow.
Never mind what colours are trendy. The honest truth is that any colours can look amazing as long as they are used properly, and likewise you can use trendy colours incorrectly and they will look just awful. The question is what colours do you like? Many paint manufacturers now make their paint swatch chips in a way that you will see a few colours that work well together on one chip. Take a look at those and see if any do something for you if you don't already have an idea of what colours you are drawn to. Good luck!

The "in" colors right now are earth tones [brown, beige, orange, green, black] but you should choose colors you like. As for the whole having to blend, only room that you see from another room like the kitchen to the dining-room or the living-room and the hall. Good luck.

as a painting contractor of luxury homes i have to agree with queenbee as the earth tone shades of browns are tops right now
colors with names like latte, nomadic desert , , mocha etc. you get the idea....go with what you personally like. My house has five shades of grey / greens and works perfectly with my art and furniture.

I painted my bedroom dark blue and regret it. Get some light blocking curtains and you will be ok.
