JetBlue
They fly from NYC to Burbank for a pretty good price.
Burbank is about 15 Miles north of downtown LA.
I believe they also go to Long Beach, about 20 miles south of downtown.

Im from NY and now live in LA. My family is back there so I fly home often.
The cheapest flights are normally from LAX to JFK.
(Although I do prefer to fly JetBlue from Long Beach to JFK)
What i always do is go to Yahoo Travel. Type in LAX and JFK (or wherever you may be flying to). Then make sure you click on FLEXIBLE DATES. A bunch of different airlines will apprear with great prices. Once this comes up, you will just have to search for the date in which you need to travel. If that date dosent appear under one airline, then try a different until you find what you need.

JetBlue also flies into Long Beach which is usually at a reasonable price.
