My cat has a two scratching posts (one vertical, one horizontal) and while he uses them regularly, he still insists on scratching my furniture and carpet runner that is on my stairs. I have tried double sided tape and balloons to deter him. Nothing works! Please recommend a spray that I can try or suggest other ideas. And no, declawing is not an option - too cruel. Thanks!

Rather than a spray, use orange peel. Cats do not like it for some reason. This also works when you want to keep cats off of shelves and away from breakable objects.

Forget scratching posts. The reason you cat is scratching in the house is probably one of two reasons. Firstly it can't get outside. Cats like to scratch and if you cat has outside access it can scratch the trees, fences or decking. Try to encourage it to use the same area. The second reason could be insecurity. It feels anxious and is marking its territory. Give it a lot of fussing, but not when it's just raked your furniture!

Try a spray called "STAY OFF!". You may also want to try Soft Paws nail caps. These are declawing alternatives that are like acrylic nails for cats. Most vets and groomers carry them and will put them on. That way there are no chemicals involved, and you can still humanely control the clawing. Good for you for saying NO to declawing! Good luck!

I'm glad you decided not to declaw! To many people seem to like mutilating their pets(croping ears and tails and declawing!) I used a spary bottle filled with water and sprayed my cat every time she scratched, I also would say "Psssst" and soon she learned that with the comand she'd get wet. If your worried about it happing while your not around anything with citrus oil or peppers will keep her away. I hope that helps!

small bowls of pepper placed in spots where you don't want spraying; some "sticky tape" you can buy at the pet store(it's double sided-put around the bottom/sides of the furniture and they hate the stickiness on their paws....good luck! I have the same problem...get a bottle of water and spray him when he does it and tell him "NO"; cats are very smart...I just say it now and they usually listen...

It didnt work for my cats. We ended up spraying them with water and giving them cat nip on a regular scratching board.

You will need to pee in a spray bottle, then spray that on your furniture. Mark your territory, before they can do it!!!
