A lot of places have pumpkin patches, hay rides, etc.

Go to a nearby orchard and collect apples and then make a pie, the kids will love to see how the process works.

The libraries usually do things. Check your local community centers too. Some churches do the Trunk of Treats. A lot of malls now offer trick or treating store to store. As a fall activity, make turkey hands at home and get a Gingerbread House kit to do together. They will love that. Go to 'about.com' and look for your local city. They usually have great listings of all the local upcoming and annual events.

We have a few Local farms that do things- Corn mazes, apple picking, hay rides, pumpkin patch picking...Also a mall is having a "safe" trick or treating from 6-8 at the end of the month.

Check the paper for loacl fairs and parades. We have been to a different parade each week for 3 week-end now. Most community fairs are free to walk around. At that age you can even go to a farmers market and walk around and they love it. We have museums that have great childrens sections for that age too.,

Oh my god you have to take them to the pumpkin patch! They offer it in most rural cities and it's free. You go see lots and lots of pumpkins and the kids can take pictures on top of them. You even get to take one home at a small price. Theres even food and drinks where i live. Maybe let them wear their costumes!!
