If you pay for the downloads (iTunes, Yahoo Music Unlimited) it's legal. If you don't (Kazaa, Limewire, Bearshare) it's not.

File sharing is only illegal when it is a private file that is being shared.

Typically, things like movies and music are considered illegal downloads. However, the INTENTION of Limewire is for people to be able to share FREE programs. Now, we all know there are HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of "free download" type programs floating around (remember, it used to be called "shareware") and THOSE are the programs and whatnot Limewire is intended to share.
Of course, it is also perfectly legal to fileshare ANYTHING that is not copyrighted or trademarked. If you create a file by yourself and it's an original work it is not illegal to fileshare that to to as many people as you want. But it IS illegal to fileshare something (like a program or a song) that you would normally have to pay for.

So there you go. If you have to buy it, it's probably illegal to fileshare. If you made it or it's a free prog. anyway, it's perfectly cool.

It's legal, but if you want to use the files you download and share for commercial use such as DJs and people who are planning to use the files for websites have to pay for it. If you're using the files for private personal use it's free. Kazaa isnt free you pay per download and Bearshare is free, but you paya monthly fee if you want to use the downloads for commercial use(DJs and Website designers). The only reason the legal wrangle came was from Napster, but they could have set it up like Bearshare and charged a monthly fee for commercial use to keep it legal at the same time free for those who arent using the files for commercial use.

yes it is file sharing, and i have downloaded it twice and uninstalled it twice, it makes my computer freeze and run very slowly. Both times that i uninstalled it, my computer ran fine. Plus you have to pay a fee to join limewire, and i believe it is ran through 360 share.
