If you have no papers, you can't.
"Pure Bred" dogs require papers that document their pedigree - and if you don't have documentation of the dog's parents, you don't have a pure bred dog.

There is no 100% definitive way of telling if a dog that is not papered is actually pure bred. If the parents are registered and have pedigrees, then the breeder may have not registered your dog for a reason.
It really doesn't matter if a dog is purebred or not, cherish him/her for the dog he/she is and enjoy the companionship!

There is no DNA test to tell if a dog is purebred. The DNA test only compaires the DNA of the puppy against that of the parents so you can say "yup" they are the puppy's parents.
Unless both parents are registered, there is no way to be certain.

Actually, it's spelled retriever. There's no way to tell and why bother? The AKC will register puppy mill puppies, so there's no pride or significance in having "an AKC registered" dog. Just love him and enjoy him for what he is :) God bless ~Nise~
