Its not just the nicotine. Its also the other 50+ chemicals they out in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as 'my body needs something, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these 'my body needs something' sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the 'want something' feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we've had one we still have the feeling, and want another!

If you kick the habit it will give your love life a big boost as smoking inhibits blood flow to the outer skin layers. You will not stink like an ashtray and neither will your house and clothes, you will have more energy, you will be mor ealive, you will lose the grey pallor to your skin. (All smokers have this) These are only a few of the many benifits to be had from beating the weed habit. I got rid of it by joining a support group at my surgery, peer group pressure is good! Also with patches and gum, together with sugar free lollipops just like Kojak. (Who loves ya baby?) If you suffer from depression, (who doesn't these days?) avoid the anti smoking pills, they can make depression worse. Also there is a nicotine inhaler that you can suck in extremis. Avoid coffee, tea, pubs and any situation that psychologically reminds you of lighting up and last but not least, GOOD LUCK!

Without any doubt, nicotine patches. I have been smoking for 36 years and have tried everything to no avail. Yet since March, I have been on the patches and now only have one cigarette now and then. (Yes, I have got to make the final shove and refuse cigarettes when they are offered to me free!) However, I see this as nothing short of a miracle: I can breathe, my skin is all moist and dewy, I sleep through the night and the horrible chest pains and coughing have gone, along with the smell. Go to your doctor. There are now stop-smoking clinics all over the country, as they believe the initial cost will be worth it for the country's national health and health costs in the long run. This means that you will have a nurse who will support you for up to a year as well, and the patches are free to those who don't pay for prescriptions anyway! GO AND SEE YOUR DOCTOR! You owe it to your children! Good luck!

The best way to give up is to be certain that you are doing the right thing, set yourself a date & then just stop.
Physically your body wont crave cigs after 3days, mentally its a bit harder than 3days but it is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo worth it. Think how nice you will smell, feel, look ?
I gave up on 11th August & am still not smoking. My last day of smoking i smoked as many as i could in the last hour, i felt sick, my throat hurt & quite frankly i realised how utterly revolting smoking is......just stop, you CAN do it, its not easy but its not that hard either. You will be suprised after 1day that actually you can cope with out smoking !
Best of luck :-)
ps. If it helps to know, i was smoking 40+ a day, never cut down or used anything but will power !!

Congratulations. Maybe get gum or mints but don't keep that up unless they're sugarless. You don't want to spend the money you're saving at the dentist. Warning the bad chemical cravings don't leave that easily. Some people still have them months later....even years. Take it from me. It took me two times to stop. The first time I stopped for two years and went back. I haven't smoked now for 10 years.

I agree with everyone who said will power is the best way. I used Zyban (wellbutrin) and the side effects were so bad I would never suggest anyone ever take that Drug. I suppose if you spoke to your dr about it he/she could tell you if you're at risk for the worst of them, but try cold turkey it is the best way as long as you don't have someone around you smoking all of the time.

Allen Carr, stopping smoking was unbeliveably easy after reading his book "The easy way to stop smoking". I couldn't belive it, all the times I had suffered through trying to quit with gum and willl power and all I had to do was read this book. Incredible!!!
