Depending on where you are living, you want to consider breeds that are recommended for apartment dwelling. Mixes of small breeds are always good, but here are a few general breeds to consider:
Carin Terrier
French Bulldog
Boston Terrier
Dachshund
Affenpinscher
Chihuahua
Miniature Pinscher
Shih Tzu
Australian Terrier
Pug

A very smart dog.

Do yourself and the dog a favor, wait until you are outof college to get a pooch. I used to live in a college neighborhood on a permanent basis, every May, there were abandoned dogs all over. The kids went home for the summer and just left their dogs to fend for themselves, they could not give them away because there were so many people trying to get rid of their dogs and they did not want to pay money to leave it at the SPCA.

That is cruel and abusive. A dog will not be allowed in the dorms and many landlords will no longer rent to students with dogs due to the above reason and the damage done by animals that were left alone a lot and were not properly trained or cared for.

Unless you plan on staying home ALOT or you have roomates that are game and willing to help shoulder the responsibility I would wait until after college to get a dog. You also have to take the housing factor into consideration...most student housing does not allow pets, and those that do are probably going to charge you extra $$ for rent and deposits. You also have to take the extra costs into consideration...vet bills, monthly flea and heartworm medication, food, toys, and replacing the stuff that gets destroyed...dogs are expensive, and if memory serves college students are always broke. I have 2 dogs myself, and I love them both dearly, but dogs require a lot of time and attention and trying to juggle classes, homework, work, a social life, and a dog is going to be really hard. Having a dog can be alot like having a child in many ways.

I would have to say wait untill after college. I say this because between school, work and social life when will you have time for a dog. Dogs take allot of patience, time and money to raise right and college students don't have much of these things. If you insist on getting a dog ADOPT ONE from your local shelter. Not only will you be helping the community but from personal experiece adopted dogs make better pets then dogs bought from a pet store.

I got a dog in college. It can be done, just involves a few lifestyle changes. You don't have to be a "brainy, no-friends" type to make it work either. Sheesh!

I had a long-haired dachshund who is still with me (wow, talk about jumping to conclusions about people abandoning on graduation!). Instead of working out of the library I brought my stuff home with me and, after a good walk, lounged on the couch, pup in lap, to study (I lived off campus). I trained my dog well so he was always welcome at my friend's parties (and behaved well at mine). And, while it was tight, it is possible to budget for vet expenses, boarding, quality food, grooming, etc.

But back to the question:
Any dog will work if you have the time to put into it. What are your living accomodations and what is allowed? Many apartment complexes have a weight limit or breed restrictions. If you're already an avid runner or biker, you could get a larger dog to take with you on your excursions. I had a friend with two goldens who did quite well during her college years, but she was an athlete who incorporated them into her workouts. If you're not-so-much the sporty type, something smaller is probably in order. Check out the toy group at the AKC to get some ideas: www.akc.org .

Or just head out to your local shelter and find a size and tempermant that will work best with your lifestyle. Good luck!

None,if you're in College you will not have time to look after a dog and dogs are not usually allowed in dorms or lecture halls unless they are the seeing eye type and you have to have a need for this.

If you need one, get a stuffed, plush dog.

Probably none because he will not be allowed in the buildings while you are in the dorms, classes, the dining hall, or any building unless it is a seeing eye dog. If you live off campus in an apartment or house, it will be difficult for you to get back and forth to walk him, and is it fair to leave him alone all day?

Buy yourself a robot dog! They don't eat and will keep you and your friends entertained for hours at a time; some models can even go to the fridge and bring beers, pick up the paper, etc.; depends on how much $$$$ you have....

I would also have to go with no dog - your time is better spent studying, partying, and having fun with friends and co-eds. Wouldn't be fair to the pooch. unless you are the brainy, type who doesn't really have to study much to do well, and have no friends type. Then a dog would be fine
