to enjoy HD tv , your Sat. receiver must be an HD receiver , meaning it has a HDMI output to connect to an HDTV tv input .HDTV's have full digital ranges going up to 1080i .HD tv's only go up to 720p resolution .

Hi there,

There is no real difference between an HDTV and and HD TV. Means the same thing, if you have satellite you do have to upgrade to an HD Satellite system in order to get HD.
The only way that you can possible get a TV that does not need an HD box is 2 options. Option 1: Is to get a TV with a cable card slot so as to be able to receive HD systems (This card would still have to be gotten by your provider), it slots into the back of your TV. Option 2: Get a tv with an ATSC tuner option built right into it. It has the ability to pick up over the air HD signals.
Other thing that I would suggest that you should take a look at if you are getting a new system is look for at least 2 HDMI inputs, reason being is that 2 HDMI is the minimum required inputs for your HD systems (1 HDMI used for your HD box and the other for your HD DVD player).
If you need any more help on this contact me, I also work at a big box store and am trained on this stuff.

I Feel your pain in college I worked at a big box store and had to learn all this stuff in a few days in order to be the expert to then explain it to customers. Glad I went to school to be a teacher. Try this link it has just about everything you want to know about HDTV and HD TV(They are the same) No you don't need a receiver for HDTV The receiver is just to give better sound and route all your equipment to the TV. But again you don't need one. Maybe you mean an HD tuner?

If you need more answers you can always send me a message directly.

Good luck!

Do yourself a favor, don't waste your money on HD tv. There is not enough programming in HD format to justify the purchase. Oh, and anything you watch that is NOT in HD, looks all f*cked up.
