If it truly is a sinus infection, antibiotics are your only answer to cure it. Anything else may diminish the symptoms temporarily, but they will come back with a fury. Please bite the bullet, go to a doctor and get antibiotics.

The reason you have a sinus infection is because the openings to your sinuses are blocked. To reduce the swelling in the area of the sinuses I recommend pseudophed. Buy the generic store brand over the counter. Ignore the dosage instructions and use twice as much as it says. Be sure to read the warnings regarding high blood pressure and certain heart problems; you may not be able to use this medication. Sinus infections can cause very serious secondary infections and despite what others on this site have said, you need to be evaluated by a physician and more than likely take antibiotics along with the pseudophed for your condition.

See....this is what gets to me. You have insurance, you just don't want to spend your money on it. Well, if you actually do have a sinus infection you really need an antibiotic, but only a doctor can diagnose that and give you the correct one. You may just have a cold in which case an antibiotic won't work.

You can also go to the store and buy a nasal bulb syringe. Available where they have the baby products. Take some luke-warm salt water....pull it into the bulb and shoot it up your nostril. You have to be standing over the sink or toilet because all that nasty green, yellow mucus is going to come out. Repeat with the other nostril. It does work to get rid of a lot of mucus--whether you have an infection or just a cold.

i,ve suffered with sinus infections your bout 20 years.
When it gets bad & you get bad headaches & pains around the front of your face, the best thing that i,ve found for it is either
Menthol crystals of warm salty water.
Menthol crystals are very cheap, what you have to do is take a very small amount & i mean 2 or 3 small ones.
drop them in to a small bowl of hot water.
close your eyes put a towel over your head & breathe in the fumes too clear your congestion.
Salt in to warm water, not too hot as you have to cup your hands in it.
Immerse your nose under the water in your hands & with a fairly strong sniff backwards taking in the water so it trickles down the back of your throat do this several times, make sure the water is quite salty!! as it cleanses & soothes.
Dont think that im a crank, i discovered this by accident years ago whilst i was a scuba diver, i was in the middle of a bad bout of sinus infection & after spending 2 days snorkling i suddenly realised that i no longer had any pain of problem breathing.
But as soon as i returned home it came back!! So i started with the saltwater & it really does help.

If the sinus infection is bacterial, which is normally is, only antibiotics will get rid of it. Usually, a doctor will prescribe antibiotics for 7-10 days, so you should go to the doctor and just pay the money and get the meds.

sinus infections (even bacterial) do not necessarily need to be treated with antibiotics. it is best to let your immune system step and do the work itself.

most infections are viral anyway. get as much rest as you can, i know this is hard when you work for a living. but if you really want to get well, it is what your body needs.

drink as much water as you can - a gallon a day if you can stand it. being properly hydrated will thin out the nasal secretions and allow them to drain better.

avoid antihistamines unless you have really bad allergies. these will dry out the sinus but thicken the mucous. stick with decongestants which act to decrease swelling in nasal passages. but they will also dehydrate you so drink a lot of water!!

steamy showers are good, as are humidifiers or vaporizers in the sleeping area.

you can aslo irrigate your nasal passages with saline (google nasal irrigation for products and methods).

eat healthy. cut down on sugar and dairy (if you are sensitive to it) for a week or so. i find cutting out dairy clears my sinuses right up!

the best you can do is rest, hydrate and eat right.

however, if you have a continuing high fever or are so sick you can't get out of bed, see a doctor!

Try taking some Oil of Oregano - it acts like a natural anti-biotic. Should be available at your local heath food store or even drug store vitamin section. Some Echinacea, Vitamin C, and Zinc would also be helpful.

if your looking for homeopathy cures my doctor told me to make some salt water and sniff it into my nose but be care full not to much or you ll choke .......you do this in the morning .......when your stuffy or running.........at night take a q-tip and twirl it in Vaseline coat the inside of your nose with it....the saltwater dissolves the snot so to speak.....and the Vaseline keeps you from getting dry at night.......when you dry out the brain sends the signal for mucus production.......and sometimes it over does it......that's what causes all the drainage.....i have always had sinusitis and the prescription and over the counter stuff just doesn't work for me .........this does.

You can try a product called alcolol (not alcohol) to rinse your sinuses with a syringe. It might not get rid of your infection but it might help prevent the next one.
