If God were real, wouldn't he have "stepped up to the plate" on any of the millions of other occasions good people got hurt?
Columbine?
Holocaust?
Starving children in Africa?
Starving children down the street from you?
Abuse?
Priests molesting kids?

The current worldwide system of things is temporary, and under the disgusting control of Satan the Devil.
(1 John 5:19) The whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one.
(John 16:11) The ruler of this world has been judged.
(2 Corinthians 4:4) The god of this system of things has blinded the minds of the unbelievers
The protection God provides is for the spiritual protection of each faithful individual. God's protection can help a person to remain firm to godly principles and qualify for an eternal reward, beyond this temporary system of things.
(John 12:31) Now there is a judging of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.
(Ephesians 6:10-13) Go on acquiring power in the Lord and in the mightiness of his strength. 11 Put on the complete suit of armor from God that you may be able to stand firm against the machinations of the Devil; 12 because we have a wrestling, not against blood and flesh, but against ...against the wicked spirit forces in the heavenly places. 13 On this account take up the complete suit of armor from God, that you may be able to resist in the wicked day and, after you have done all things thoroughly, to stand firm.

(Ecclesiastes 9:11-12) The swift do not have the race, nor the mighty ones the battle, nor do the wise also have the food, nor do the understanding ones also have the riches, nor do even those having knowledge have the favor; because time and unforeseen occurrence befall them all. 12 For man also does not know his time. Just like fishes that are being taken in an evil net, and like birds that are being taken in a trap, so the sons of men themselves are being ensnared at a calamitous time, when it falls upon them suddenly.

This event is so tragic, but you must remember that God gave us a world of free will. If God intervenes everytime something bad is about to happen then we are no longer free to make choices - good or bad. Why not question why satan influenced this person to pick on innocent young people or to do this at all?
By the way, it is perfectly OK to question the Lord. Some of the most devoted Christians in the Bible openly questioned God and why things happened the way they did. Christians have to believe that , although we may never be aware of it, some good will find its way out of this tragedy.

Man is the master of his own destiny for the most part. I for one don't believe that if you step off the curb and get creamed by a UPS truck that "God felt it was your time to go".
The same with this case. People can be evil, twisted, mentally unstable or plain, old sadists who revel in seeing others suffer and die at their own hands.
It was fate. Pure and simple.

The verse you may be referring to is Matthew 5:8 -
Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.
These precious children are present with the Lord. How tragic for their families to grieve the loss of such young children.
Study and read the bible to learn about the character of God. He is sovereign and will judge the man who did this heinous crime.
We live in a fallen world.

I hadn't heard that God had punished the Amish... When did this happen? Isn't it bad enough that evil men stomp all over them? Jim

There is no god, at least there isn't a loving god. No god would ever let something like this happen to a peace-loving people like the amish. It's a real tragedy.

Well, man can't even start to comprehend the complex reasons of why God does what He does.

There have been Christian martyrs in every generation.
Those girls are in heaven. Their loved ones will follow.
Do not put your hopes, store your treasures, on earth.
