When you see him in the hall and walk next to him, grab his hand. When he goes to hug you, hug him, but also give him a little kiss on the cheek. He'll start to get the idea. Then again... if he's 12, he's probably to shy and would be embarrassed.

Try holding his hand, and if he pulls back, he isn't ready for that.
