I don't know who Shayna is but i can assure you all she is NOT an RN. The appendix is an appendage that is why it is called the appendix. At this time it is not known what it's purpose was and the exact cause of appendicitis is usually undetermined even with examination. It is NOT a lymph node, it is as stated an appendage that hangs from the cecum, about pencil diameter and 50 to 150mm in length. It does seem as though having appendicitis is more common in some families than others. It is most common in the 15 to 35 year old age group.

There could be a gentic tendency for it. however, it is very common for many people to have the appendix removed. It often gets plugged and or inflammed due to constipation, blockages or other bowel problems. It is actually a lymph gland but is not essentially needed in todays time. It was mostly needed in cave man days. Some scientists believe is will eventually disappear dur to natural selection.
