Absolutely!

www.hawaii.com has great listings of all kinds of hotels on both islands - I also found really good reviews on travelocity

If you're comfortable with it, go for Priceline, that is the best way to save a bundle on a hotel anywhere, no reason why hawaii won't be the same.

have a great time! Aloha!

The other islands of Maui, Kauai, Hawaii(the Big Island), and Lana'i probably will fit the idea of what the majority of visitors picture when they think of Hawaii. Honolulu is on the island of Oahu, which is the states capitol. Where you and your family should go depends on what you all enjoy doing and what it is you expect to see while you're there. The outer islands have a much lower population density, and you can literally drive through fields of wildflowers and pass rainbows along the way! There are lots of things for children to do in Honolulu but I would go with Maui if I were you--if Honolulu and Maui are your only choices. Maui still retains close to its traditional roots, and you will get to experience Hawaii without all the bells and whistles that you will find on Oahu. Oahu (barring the North Shore and the west side of the island) is not the paradise that many people imagine it to be. If you are looking for an authentic Hawaiian experience, any of the outer islands would be a good choice.

I stayed at a great family run B&B in Maui, but can't recall the name. It was a couple of years ago and only $40 per night. I think I found them through the tourist centre. If you are younger and don't mind hostels, there are hostels on both islands for less than $20 per night.

Been to Maui twice in last 4 years. If you can swing a couple of days in Hana you will not be disapointed. It is the best drive getting there and it is the most spactacular side of the island. Just talking about it makes me smile. Hana Kai is nice but not expensive.

The most inexpensive hotels on Maui are probably in Kahului, a few miles from the airport.

It's easy to commute to the south beaches around Kihei and Wailea.

I would definitely go to Priceline. Name your own price. This way you are at least guaranteed the accommodations you expect(you chose the number of stars). In general everything is more expensive there, so dont be too surprised. I think its because its so remote(they are the most remote islands in the World!)
