It is much easier to justify murdering people and stealing their property in the name of God than it is just murdering them and stealing their property.

US & Israel are two noteable demonstrations of that concept.

Because religion is the construction of man. Religion is a tool nothing more, a tool for the masses as a means of control and submission. It is simply a way for the weak to gain power and control.
