Some christians use "turn the other cheek" to justify a woman staying with a man who beats her - she must turn the other cheek. Yes, I actually heard a preacher state that and also some people simply use that verse to justify their evil behavior.
You have people doing something similar in Islam and other religions; justifying their actions by a verse. However, the Quran isn't that big of a book. It says to refer to the sunnah and obey it. It doesn't go into the details of how to make the 5 daily prostration prayer - you have to refer to THE SUNNAH for the details. So, when you read a verse in the Quran, you have to refer to the Sunnah for its explanation. Islam is QURAN and SUNNAH. There is one small sect that is "Quran only" ....but sunni Muslims are followers of Quran and Sunnah.
So, you can't just read a verse without referring to the sunnah to be sure you're not taking it out of context.
From a Muslim website:
The Prophet, Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him (saaws - peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Abusing a Muslim is a sin, and killing him is disbelief." (Bukhari and Muslim)
"The Prophet never beat any of his wives or servants..."
please read the rest of the article, and although you may disagree in the permissibility to lightly strike a woman due to flagrant disobedience, after the other prescribed methods (first admonish verbally, next is to separate from her in the bed) are tried to no avail..... there are plenty of people who see this as clear direction that limits his ability to ever cause her physical harm, unlike any guidelines from christianity or judaism.
Do you know how high the wife abuse rate is in america, primarily being christian??? Muslim women see Islam as being much more restrictive (regarding abuse) on the man than christianity or judaism.

Yes, why
The Quran 004.034
Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because God has given the one more than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in
absence what God would have them guard. As to those women on whose part you fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them, refuse to share their beds, beat them; but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means: For God is Most High, great.

The Quran Does not mention a stick at all. It mentions a spanking. My wife loves to be spanked when she misbehaves and you would too. It is illegal in Islam to bruise or hurt your wife. only spank
But look in your Bible! It says to chop the wifes hand off for helping her husband in a fight Deuteronomy chap25 verses 11-12 read!
I think women stay in Islam cause they'd rather get a spank on the bottom then a hand chopped off!

because it is what they know and how they grow up.
there are awful things in the christian bible as well. i bet you never read the passage that claims that if a woman is raped it is her own fault for walking without a man and she should be stoned to death by her own family. thats in the christian bible. but if you actually read the koran, it is mostly about love and peace and non-violence. people translate it as they choose. some people can interpret one passage as love and other people will see it as hate. im sure that in your life you have understood something that someone said as different than they intended it. people see what they want to see.
The koran is a book that promotes the beliefs of love thy neighbor and turn the other cheek: the basic beliefs of jesus that mohammed expanded on. he believed in love, not war.
as for the women, they grow up in that society and culture, it is what they know, and most are not so exposed to our society that they think it is better than their own.

Your friend was wrong...I advise you to read the Qur'an yourself before you make assumptions about a religion.
Fact: 30,000 Americans come to Islam every year...65% of them are women.
Why would 17,000 women put themselves in an abusive-oppressive religion.
Islam was the first religion to give women rights.
[ 30:21] Among His proofs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves, in order to have tranquility and contentment with each other, and He placed in your hearts love and care towards your spouses. In this, there are sufficient proofs for people who think.
[3:195 ]"Their Lord responded to them: "I never fail to reward any worker among you for any work you do, be you MALE OR FEMALE, YOU ARE EQUAL TO ONE ANOTHER........."

the women that convert either:
1. they love their muslim man and feel they she must convert or he will be unhappy
2. they are WEAK women and are forced to changed religion through influence and fear
3. they are physically tortured to change religion
in islam, men have the right to stone women in the streets if they want. the 1st answer to your question deosnt deny this and he is muslim follower. i guess it isnt easy for a women to change religion if she lives amongst such bad people.

taken out of context
it is a hadith not in the Quran
If you find out that your wife is cheating on you you are to tell her to stop. if she continues you are to not sleep with her. and if she still continues the husband has the right to hit her but not with anything larger than a tooth brush.

no..that's not right..your friend just misunderstood...many answers from Muslim brothers above are right..it is positive that you ask Muslims about what you find strange in Islam.
And ff f, what is your reference? you described 17,000 women converting every year by these descriptions without any proof..now this is what I call a lie.
Peace.
