I thought the Binkie Fairy idea on Super Nany was neat. They collected all the binkies and made it a game. They put them all in a pretty gift bag and hung the gift bag in the tree for the binkie fairy. The binkie fairy came that night and left a little present since she gave her all the binkies for other babies. Make the present something he can sleep with so you have an easier out at night time.
I respect the fact that you are trying to make it easy on your child and take their feelings into account. You do need to take it away soon after if not before teeth come in. It can really mess up their bite and alignment. 2.5 is too old for a binkie.
I bet the reason the sitter has luck with no binkies is b/c it has never been an option. He knows it is an option with you and throws a fit for it. I don't think there is anything wrong with your sitter having rules for her house. I watched a child once and I had a rule of no gum at my house. So, don't listen to the other person. Be glad your sitter cares enough to have rules.
If the creative methods don't work, you are going to have to just take it and stick to your guns. If you take them, throw them away so you don't give in.

You have to stick to what you know is best. Explain to your child (you'll be shocked at what he understands) that still having a binky at 2 1/2 isn't good for his teeth. And tell him, he's a big boy and big boys don't use Binky's and take it away. He'll get used to it and be fine. Like you said he doesn't use it at the sitter's. Probably because he doesn't want the other kids to see it. He's playing on your emotions, Mommy. Next time you put him to bed and he starts with the crying. just go to your room, you can cry because he's crying if he makes you feel in better, but DON'T GIVE IN!!! The tears will only last a week or two. I took my son's bottle when he was 1 and the binky was gone about 6 months later. Actually on his first birthday. I took the bottle away, gave him a sippy cup and he got over it. They say the earlier you do it the better.
Good Luck!!!

Once you take it away, you can't give it back because he knows you have it. One family I know had the dentist take it, because then they weren't the "bad guy". The dentist told the child the truth it could hurt her teeth and he would give it to the binky fairy to take care of. Since the child already is able to self soothe at the sitter's, I would first start with no at nap time. Sometimes binky's get "lost", so that is a possibility. However you decide to take the binky, remember, if you give it back then you are starting all over again.

"he only has it when he naps or goes to bed at night. When he naps at his sitters house, she doesn't allow him to use the binky. I would like to stop giving it to him,"
Seems to me your son is already over his binky at the sitters, but not at home. If it is really an issue with you for him to have it then take it away. He will learn to self sooth and as he has at the sitters.
With reassurance, it always took my kids three days to get over anything. Bottles, potty training, Sucky cups the works. Three days of hell and then reward of a child capable of moving on to his or her next step of development.
Never scold a child for mourning the loss of something have the conversation and the why and assure him that it will be OK.

Cutting the nipple off is an option, but it didn't work for us.
Daycare would only give my daughter her binky during naps. They kept it out of sight from her the rest of the day. One day the teacher slipped it over to me and my daughter asked for it and we told her the binky fairy took it because she was a big girl now. She asked for it once in a while but didn't throw a fit over it like we thought she would.

My son is 2 1/2 now too and he does the same thing. He only has it at naps and bed time at my house. When he is with his dad or at the babysitter he doesn't even ask for it but at home he has to have it. It doesnt bother me because its only when he is in the bed. I don't allow it any other time. I don't think you have to take it away. The child will let it go when they are ready.

What I did with my son is cut a little bit at a time the tip for the rube thing. Every week I cut little by little and soon he gave the Binky up because it was not working right and he was done with it. The sooner the better to get ride of that thing he will ruin his teeth.

You' ll give in, and he knows it. Thrown it in the trash' and let him see you throw it away. Tell him binky's are for babies, not for big boys like he is. He will cry like mad for the first few nights, but DO NOT give in, and buy a new one. He will soon get the hint.

I think my son was about 2 when we finally got rid of his. We just threw them all out, and told him that since he's such a big boy he didn't need it anymore. He cried about it the first night, but we made a game out of it. He got a sticker that said he was a big boy, and he was ok with that. There were a few times over the next couple of weeks, when he was very tired, that he asked about it, but it was more of a passing thought than anything else. He'll get over it pretty quick, especially if you make him part of the process, and praise him for being such a big boy about it. Kids just love that positive attention.

Sorry but the only way is just to take it away. He'll fuss for a few days but he'll get over it.
It's too late for you now but for those of you who have small kids take them away EARLY and it'll be so much easier!
Get them all out of the house so you won't give in.
