Pride is the worst. It seems so harmless on the surface, and yet pride must exist for one to fall into any of the other six sins. Pride is the belief that one's personal ways are superior. Thomas Aquinas, the 13th century philosopher and saint, says that pride as an "inordinate self-love [which] is the cause of every sin... the root of pride is found to consist in man not being, in some way, subject to God and His rule."
It's this belief, "I know better than God," which will then lead into any other sin--no matter how small or how great. The murderer must first decide to follow his own will over God's before commiting a murder. The adulterer decides it's okay to cheat before actually cheating....so on and so forth.

I hope you don't mind if an atheist answers! The seven deadly sins are all horrible, however I believe there is truly only one. Selfishness. All others can be boiled down to selfishness. In fact any wrongdoing of any measure can be labled as selfishness. Murder=selfishness. Rape=selfishness. Theft=selfishness. Gossip=selfishness. Lying=selfishness. Addictions=selfishness. We are selfish creatures by nature. Our society of materialism and appearances fosters that selfish nature even more.

Anger-look at the state of the world today, extending all the way to the peaceable Amish community, most recently.
Gluttony-just look around at the grocery, and the co-morbid conditions that go along with extreme obesity are driving health costs up for all of us.

The concept of 'sin' is the worst, because it's a way of manipulating society. If all you want is to teach people not to harm others or themselves, law is enough.

Envy, leads to hatred which can lead to murder, which can send you to hell.
But honestly any of these can send you to hell. It's just easeir for satan to work through hatred to get you there!!!!!
If you already have hate in your heart, your have way there, now all he needs you to do is act on it.
