No you can't paint the tip of your airsoft gun to simulate the real thing. How about dead as a consequence. The only thing that keeps a cop from drawing on you and maybe shooting you is that orange tip. It IDs the gun to the cop or security officer that it is non lethal. Beyond that try assault with a deadly weapon, brandishing a weapon, or any other crime that can be upped with a deadly weapon. The gun may not be real but the charge will stem from the person that sees it point of view. There have already been cases of people convicted of armed robery with toy weapons, since the victim can't tell it's a toy it's considered real when the charges come down.

Don't listen to all these media-fed answerers. The only thing the orange tip is needed for is a notification during transportation or sale/display. You will not get shot by a cop for having an airsoft gun if you play in a legal airsoft park or arena. If you are playing at say Operation Lion Claws, there will not be a cop that is going around shooting every player with his service pistol. If you bring your airsoft gun into a public place or city property, however, you run the risk of at least getting the cops called on you. But whenever you are transporting your M4, put some orange or red tape on the barrel. You can remove it once you get to the playing site. Anyway, back to the real topic. Find some black spraypaint from a hobby store (or Walmart) that isn't harmful to plastic. If you can, remove the entire flash hider and spray a couple coats of paint on it. If you can't remove it, tape off the rest of the gun that may be exposed to paint particles. EDIT: Guys, orange tips are not mandatory. If they were, airsoft stores wouldn't be selling all black flash hiders. They are only REQUIRED for transportation and sale/exhibition.

The guns are already realistic enough. Don't make the mistake of painting the orange tips black. The only trouble you may get into is a police officer mistaking the gun as real and shooting you. I have come across the airsoft guns more and more during traffic stops. It makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Not a good thing for you.

I doubt if you are going to get a fine or go to jail for doing that. The purpose of the orange tip is a safety issue with the police. If they see you playing with the gun they can see it's not real by the orange tip.
If you paint it black they could mistake it for a real gun and then you could be putting yourself in a dangerous situation.

As has been said, it's usually a misdemeanor, and that means (at the worst) a fine and/or less that a year in jail.

However:

The purpose is so Police will know it's a fake gun, to "prevent accidental tragedies". Good idea, but the reality is this:

As you have mentioned, bad guys can paint their real gun tips orange, to make cops hesitate. Knowing this, if you point something that looks like a gun at me, I WILL shoot you, and I don't care what color it is. This is absolutely legal, since I would be in legitimate fear of my life, and the law allows me the use of deadly force to defend myself from legitimately perceived deadly force. Since I saw something that looks like a gun, and I know bad guys paint their gun tips orange, I am legitimately in fear of my life.

The lesson here is: Do NOT expect an orange tip to protect you. Do NOT do anything threatening with an air soft, orange tip or not. I would hate to hurt someone holding an air soft, but I want to live to go home, so don't make me make that choice; I will shoot.

In some states, and I believe Texas is one of them, it is illegal to paint the orange indicator of a toy or replica weapon. Furthermore, it is dangerous in a police can mistake it as real and shoot you in defense should you brandish it in a threatening manner.

Most cases where it is illegal to do so, it is a misdemeanor with a fine.

i wouldn't go there, i know if you are involved in an altercation or incident in any fashion and you brandish this 'weapon' fake or not painted or not, you can get in trouble and could get shot. I am not sure of the extent of the trouble you would get into, but i assure you that is it not a good idea at all.

they started doing this for your safety - once there was a 12yr old boy(who looked older) who was mentally challenged - he had a plastic gun - noone knew it was plastic - cops came - yelled at him to put the gun down - he didn't 'cause he didn't understand and was shot and killed.
as for the law - no idea - sorry - but i'd think twice about it

Guess you could do either one and then get shot..........

Your mother should be very proud of how stupid you are. Who reminds you to start breathing in the morning?
