By the world, he means the wicked world which is right now controlled by Satan. If we become involved in worldly things (lust, violence, hatred, war, drug or alcohol abuse, etc.) rather than becoming involved in spiritual things (reading the Bible, teaching others about God's Kingdom, and promoting love and peace) we cannot be friends of God.

To be friends of God, we must rid ourselves of any emotional attachment to the present wicked world, characterized by a rebellious attitude toward God.

The Bible admonishes us: “Do not be loving either the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him; because everything in the world—the desire of the flesh and the desire of the eyes and the showy display of one’s means of life—does not originate with the Father, but originates with the world. Furthermore, the world is passing away and so is its desire, but he that does the will of God remains forever.”
(1 John 2:15-17)
Most people today are motivated by fleshly desires—uncontrolled sexual appetite, greedy pursuit of money, and abusive use of power. But to be on God’s side, one must overcome such desires.—Colossians 3:5-8.

Never forget: “The world is passing away and so is its desire, but he that does the will of God remains forever.”—1 John 2:17.

When you truly love God you don't love the world and material things. You should love someone as you do God because it is not changeable. This world changes with every season and yesterday's favorite things:sin,clothes,houses,money,cars.etc. all that gets thrown away. How do you want to be loved.

If we love anything, even people, more than we love God we are in trouble.

Because any one or thing that keeps us from loving God and doing His will is a sin.

Materialism and desire are the barriers to attaining wisdom and enlightenment. Reject the illusory reality of the material world and embrace the true reality of the divine that dwells within you is God's message.

The world friend is more than people...... What the scripture is refering to is the "things" of this world. If you worry more about your job.... more about your belongings.... about the things you want to do in this world.... than you do about your relationship with God.

This is the point of this scripture. Not about loving people.
We are commanded to love one another. But we are not commaded to love the things of this world.

"The World" in this passage means worldly pleasures;

like unmarried sex, adultery, fornication, gluttony, killing,

stealing, basically being a vile person. God want us to

be holy and as much like Christ as we can be.
