Marriage is the purview of the individual states, not the feds, to begin with.
Your snotty attitude isn't going to help bring justice to the courthouse as far as marriage is concerned.

Oh a box of worms! Thank you I can finally tell everyone what I think.
I was an American before I was a Christian. If the government really wants separation of church and state and equal rights I only see 2 options(if you have another I'd really like to hear it)
1. Make same sex marriages as legal and binding as heterosexual marriages.
2. The Gov cannot see marriage as a legal institution. Tax all people the same and allow marriage to be part of a religious commitment like baptism is. (knowing of course that there are gay churches and that gays will marry in those churches and those who are polygamists will also multiply much easier)

I don't see what business the federal governmant has in marriage at all. Marriage is a religious rite--leave it to the religious organizations. The government should not base my tax rate or benefits upon whether or not I want to go through what is commonly seen as a religious rite. The government should be involved in civil unions of those who would like to have a legal joining of assets--and this should be granted without discrimination due to a person's race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion.

The laws were originally made to reflect God's laws. However, since the seperation of church and state were made they cannot influence each other in a political sense. But since we can vote on things we want to be legal or not then there shouldn't be a problem. It's what the people believe when they go to vote that changes everything. So if the voters believe what their God tells them they will vote accordingly and vice versa

What I find amazing about this, is they insist that it is a Christian Institute... yet, our gov't will not recognize even a Christian marriage without them going to the Court House and signing Gov't papers. And once those papers are signed, according to our Gov't, you are married.... it does NOT recognize religious ceremonies as a marriage. That's a personal choice. So far, our Gov't doesn't care... it's the groups/lobbyists who bring up this crap to gather votes. It worked to get Bush in a 2nd time, and just as soon as he got in there, he dropped the whole thing........ I wonder if they realize they've been used?

because, like it or not, (and i don't mean all this in an attacking way) our current government was founded on Christian principles that followed the Christian God. Separation of church and state was brought about to protect the church from a tyrannical government, not the government from the church. When our forefathers fought for freedom of religion, they were fighting for freedom for their particular religion from the church of england, not to mean that each today shouldn't be allowed to practice the faith of their choice, because they absolutely should, but...by being an american, you are choosing to live under a Christian based government, no matter what people do to change it, its roots are still there. and about marriage, not just biblically, but traditionally, marriage is one man and one woman, and is an institution created to build a man/woman family unit. the tax breaks are so that growing families can better afford to grow. if homosexuals wish to "marry," "unify," "join," or whatever one would describe it as and build their own types of family, why not create a new form of union, since homosexuals are already breaking the social norm, why do they want the norm to conform to their practices when they don't conform themselves. EXPAND what is there now.

...Because God's way is not only the right way, but the smart way - for instance -
...RE "alternate lifestyles" - the Centers for Disease Control (hardly a right-wing outfit) reports that the average life span of a homosexual male is 41 years - far below the 70-80 years normally - is this healthy for the population? - no, it's not.
...Now, think about hospital costs to care for these folks with social diseases that came from promiscuous lifestyles or perversion.
...If people wait until after marriage to have sex, think of all the STD's they will miss out on, plus the possibility of unwanted children, and a resulting child will have a mother and a father - the best arrangement.
...It just makes sense to follow God's commands - He designed us and knows what is best.

THANK YOU. But, being a gay man, let me say you have it backwards.
Why should the government have the slightest thing to do with marriage? Marriage is an intrinsically religious concern. Therefore, the ceremonial and religious aspects rightly belong in the hands of the many religions and faiths.
Why should religions have the slightest to do with unions of adults? Unions are an intrinsically contractual and legal cocnern. Therefore, the legal contract rightly belong in the hands of the government.
I and my same-gender partner go to a Christian minister and ask to be married. He says "No way in hell." That's his right. We go to a pagan friend and ask to be married. He/She says "Awesome! No problem." We go to the government and ask to be married. The government should say, "That's not our business. Would you like to file paperwork though to be recognized as a unified couple?"

Because our nation was established with a Christian foundation. The founding fathers would be shocked if they knew the government was even considering legalizing gay marriage.
