Weight lifting can help with weight loss but be carefull not to lift too much, too often. Otherwise you will just build muscle under the fat and get bigger. You need a cardio work out to help with fat loss while you lift weights.
Strength training would entail lifting heavier weights which for sure will cause you to bulk up. You want to do toning excercises which are generally using lighter weights and more repetitions. Remember dumbbells will only work your arms and shoulders. Unless you do bench press or other chest back excercises that can be done with dumbells, but again stay away from heavy weights for things like bench press and leg excercises. At least until you slim down or tone up a bit more.
Try jogging while carying 5 pound weights in your hands and you can get cuffs that go around your ankles too.
Oh and you may hear people say Fat turns into muscle. It doesn't.

It's proven that building muscle does in fact help burn calories. BUT, it's slower / harder to acheive weight loss that way. It's better to do a good cardio workout and burn calories and after you shed some weight, add weights to your routine. More of a maintanance to keep your size down.

It's very hard to try to do both at once. My bf was getting a bit chubby, he's 6' and was a chubby 225. He watched his diet and started biking. (No weights for a year) He got down to 178 and then started back on the weights. Now he's a solid 230.

Yes, I know you don't want to be a muscle head, but he takes in 3500 - 4500 calories a day and LOSES weight now! (yeah, how sickening is that?!) I am doing the same thing with less weight though. I've lost 25 pounds since the beginning of the year and want to lose a bit more before adding weights.

Good luck! Keep in mind, you didn't gain weight overnight, it's not going to come off overnight.

The first suggestion is good, ESPECIALLY the warm up portion and stretch. EVERY exercise routine needs a good warm up and cool down. For some added cardiovascular exercise, try jacks for 1 minute 30 seconds and then at the end a 30 second burst of jacks as fast as you can go. This will elevate the heart rate and REALLY work you out. Doing these in intervals as the first person said, is a good way to break it down. Jacks are hard to do for an extended period of time. Best of luck!

Yes it does. It is a common misconception that women will "bulk up" if they lift weights. It is not possible unless you take testosterone supplements or steroids. Lifting weights will help you build muscle faster than just doing cardio exercises. Muscle requires more energy to "exist" so it will burn more calories than without it. You are also able to eat more (healthy of course) and still lose weight than if you did not include a weight routine.

By the way- it is true that muscle weighs more (is more dense)than fat so it takes up less space...so initially, you may lose inches but not weight. Do not lose hope. If you have a lot of weight to lose, you will eventually see your weight drop too.

Keep it up! Push yourself to work up to greater weights and you will be tone and fit.

First of all, muscle weighs more than fat. So if you are doing strength exercises then your weight will fluctuate according to your muscle gain. You need not to worry about weight. Measure yourself for results. Better yet, Use a mirror to determine the amount of fat you are carrying daily. Muscles are a liability. The more you have the harder your body has to work to keep them. So the faster you metabolism will be.

Not weight exactly. Muscle weighs roughly twice as much as fat. However, you will gain tone and increase your metabolism as the muscle will require more calories from, your body to sustain them.

Dumbells are # 1 for me.

No. They just make your skin look ferm and make you muscles but it doesn't help you to lose wight. Exercises and diet always go together.

no because muscle weighs more than fat, but it does help you to tone up - which is all part of the slimming down process - and it will help you lose inches rather than pounds!!!
