If you live near London get yourself to Trailfinders in High Street Kensington. They are staffed by experienced travellers and can give you loads of advice and ideas to get started; can help you book flights, car hire and accommodation and help you work on an itinerary. Once you have a basic starting point get hold of a copy of a rough guide, or lonely planet etc, of America. Have a good old read and pick the places you really want to visit and things you want to do.
Trailfidnders can also be found on line.

Consult your travel agent about visas etc., if you plan on working. If you'll need shots, they'll have the info and if not they'll be able to tell you where to start.
If you want to see the real America, take a bus or train across the country. Make scheduled stops for a couple three days where you want to spend time.
I don't advise hitch hiking.
I think you need to do some homework on where you want to go first and how much time you have. America like Canada is a big country. If you have the more recent Oprah's watch her and Gayle's excellent adventures, they have both some scary moments and some really nice ones.

If you have online acces, which you must, you should check out travel options in America. Are you talking North America, or South? There are lots of good options if you want to do a cross country trip. Do you want to hit the big cities? Do you want to see some small towns too? You need to ask yourself these questions.
California, Washington, Montana, Colorado, Texas, Alabama, Wa Dc, and New York are all interesting and valuable to see for different reasons. Pick a city that has what you want to see and go from there.
Check out hostels for a relatively cheap option of travel. Here is a useful link to US hostels. http://www.hiusa.org/
Good Luck!

If you aren't an American you can't *legally* work.
I drove on route 66 once. Some parts are closed now, but I tried to drive on it as much as I could. Some towns also have campgrounds, so if you buy yourself a tent you could save some $$ on hotels. Or you could rent a van and sleep in it. . .at rest stops.
Arizona was my favorite state. It has the grand canyon and many other marvelous sights.
So let's see. . .maybe you could start in the NW top corner, work yourself down through CA, swing by Las Vegas, then go across the bottom and back up to NYC.

I don't have any tips on how to plan your trip, but I do have a suggestion. If you have any friends or relatives scattered around the U.S. you should get in touch with them and stop for a visit...maybe they'll let you stay there a night or two...you could even get a free meal out of it. Good Luck! Sounds like fun.

I love it there!! It just depends on what you want to see. I live in Providence, Rhode Island so I am close to the mountains, beach, Boston, NYC and so many other things. I love it!
