what do you do with hickory nuts when they fall off the tree?

Pick them up, let them dry out for a few days and, then crack them open with a hammer. I used to do this all the time when I was a kid. Try toasting the nuts and putting some brown sugar on them. MMM. Put them on ice cream or in cookies or muffins. OOOH Yah!
