I'm sure that those people who see the Loch Ness monster, really see something. It's just a part of the reality that they have created for themselves.
Their reality is their own, as is yours. Who is to say that yours is right? No one. In the final analysis, it makes no difference to anyone, what they believe.

Our emotional and sense experience must match up with the Word of God. The only way to judge these things is against the Bible.

If you don't take things back to the Word it won't be long before you end up in demonic La La Land; which is daily becoming more akin to current reality.

In this La La Land you will be thinking that you have the world's greatest warm and fuzzy insights into spirituality; whether you be associated with forms such as Islam, Christianity, other "great" religions, cults, mystery societies, sorcery groups, etc., etc. etc.

God will judge the world by the Word which He has given. That is why people hate it, write there own, rewrite it or give personal, group and church interpretations and additions to it, produce false similarities, ignore parts of it, etc., etc.

Yet, like God himself, His Word will not pass away until all be fulfilled. It is the real thing. The correction for ones personal life, national life, religious life and all lies and liars present in flesh and/or spirit.

Make the sign of the cross and pray to God for protection!
If you're asking about some criteria that would help you distinguish the two, I can't think of any. Only if somehow you discover the mechanism of illusion or the "bad characters" leave some material trace.

hmmmm...Good question.
I'd say personal experience but there are plenty who say they experience 'God'. Whatever euphoria they are, in fact, going through, does not make the whole concept true for...anyone.
I've heard you can't prove a negative but if the description contradicts itself, then it is proven wrong (evilbible.com)
There's probably a long science-based answer involving senses and facts but an emotion like love can't be explained that way. Maybe that's why no one can say some things exist or don't for certain.

Why do you feel a need to? If the people who report it feel it is true then let that be good enough.

Just about everything in this life is subjective.

Try proving beyond doubt to a child that is is the same sun that rises up every morning and sets every evening!

Investigation, rule out all proven causes/possibility for the event. Such as weather, electricity, lighting and such. look for more then one witness to the event especially of they were unknown to each other. analyze any data pictures of a event for authenticity and fraud. in other words find objective logical reasons, and see whats left.

I don't try to distinguish anything. If someone says they saw a UFO, it's not up to me to try to prove if they did or didn't. If someone is possessed by demons, I believe it will show in their demonic behavior. God is real to me, that's all I know or care to know. Anything else just doesn't matter, not to me.

1 John 4:1-3
1Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

2Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

3And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

The Bible doesn't speak too highly of people that entertain spirits,Deuteronomy 18:10-12
