I stopped going there after a month because it seemed like a bunch of pseudo religious cult-like BS. /they have this type of language they all talk in that I called.."taliking in bumber stickers" I think it is onlky good for people whom like to hear thier own voice when they complain. The studies have shown the program to be a failure...why do therapists and doctors still recommend it?

There are usually dozens of AA chapters in any city. Try out a few different groups. There is one out there that you will like better. Good Luck! :)

I quit drinking about 5 years ago and never used AA, never went to a meeting or got any chips. I'd been to some meetings back when I still drank and had no intention of quitting is how I know they hand out chips. I had tried quitting before like 6 years ago and 7 years ago but just couldn't do it. Then this time 5 years ago I did and suceeded. Well, I had half a beer once, but dumped the rest out. Haven't gotten a buzz of beer or drunk in 5 years. So yes, for me it is BS. Didn't need it; didn't use it. It works for a bunch of other people though so good for them.

I think the traditional AA is b.s., but I think you may still need somewhere to talk with others who are going through the same thing. It helps to have some kind of support group, but traditional AA meetings are really lame and preach things that not all people believe in. Try to find a different place to go. And good luck!

Dude, you people are BITTER!!! To each thier own, ok? I personally am a member of a 12 step program...I am not a 12 step nazi, the 12 step police, I will not shove them down anyone's throat. I am in this program because I have the disease of addiction and it has worked for me. Its a simple program...try not to drink/use drugs just for today, or just for five minutes, as short as you need it to be. And instead of drowning all those feelings at the bottom of a bottle/pipe/fill in the blank____ deal with those things by getting to the root of the problem, and while you are doing that, just get some direction from a power greater than yourself.(NOTE: I did not say GOD/Jesus Christ/Allah or anything like that). Thats all it is! Its nothing to harp about like many people seem to do. If you find a different way to deal with your addictions...more power to you! Congratulations! I applaud you and completely respect your way of beating your demons! Just please respect everyone else's. Once again, to each thier own!

Yes, it is.
For those who say there haven't been studies, or think AA has a great success rate, check out the link below, which cites almost every study done. And check out the Penn & Teller video.
AA has a 5% success rate according to AA's own internal Triennial Survery and one conducted by AA Board of Trustees and Harvard researcher, George Vaillant.

I would not call it a bunch of BS, but it is definitely not for everyone, and maybe even not for most people. It's still recommended (and even court-ordered much of the time) because of the vocal minority for whom it has been successful, and because there just isn't anything else that works for a majority of people.
For those that it works well for, more power to them -- but their arrogance and insistence that it will work for EVERYONE (unless you have a "grave mental or emotional disorder") wears very thin. They can be very insulting to those that are unsuccessful in the program, accusing them of not being willing, or not going to enough meetings, or not wanting to quit drinking (case in point, read some of the above comments!).
Go to the recovery section of your local bookstore - there are other options like Rational Recovery, etc. As long as you have some support and some kind of program that works for you, I think your chances are good.

You will find a lot of folks that "speak in bumper stickers",,watch and listen a little more, and you will find some very cool insightful people as well. As for the pseudo- religion, you need to understand, it was founded by devout Christians, and a lot of that stuff still lingers. It is possible, to use a lot of the program without getting caught up in the "BS". I know...i have been doing it a very long time, and the "AA Nazis" hate me for expressing my views freely,,,I do not march the party line and a lot of them cant stand it. The others get what I'm saying and respect me for it. Its too much to go into here, but ill be glad to chat more through email. Don't worry..i will not try to brainwash you. I wouldn't call the program a failure..lots of people stay sober there and get their lives back..some get more strung out on the program than they ever were on booze...its just a question of what you want to get from it.

I believe that AA is a bunch of BS. My uncle was a total alcoholic for 26 or more years. When my father, his brother, was diagnosed with cancer, he slowed down on his drinking. But, the big kicker was when his mother, my grandmother, was put in the hospital deathly sick, he promised her that he would never touch another beer or any kind of alcoholic beverage. I am proud to say that my uncle has been sober for 4 months now and the only thing that he is addicted to now is..........GATORADE!!!

save analyzing the "Orange papers" for the certainty approximately AA. that's an entire innovations Fook. their very own records show a 5% fulfillment value, it extremely is dismal. maximum people who supply up eating or abusing drugs accomplish that on their very own. The ailment concept/concept , despite they call it is likewise a lie. It has in no way been proved quite, all data they have for that's anecdotal. do no longer bypass decrease back, and verify you forget each and every thing they informed you. i'm effective you spotted the "you're in denial" and the "you haven't any longer had adequate" crap published by skill of the steppers, that's their total game, they attempt to make you sense silly or seem stupid for no longer procuring into that wacky bunch of crap. you're very no longer susceptible to take heed to one in each and every of them say ,"nicely, if this would not tournament you i'm hoping you come across what you're searching for." that's simply by fact they actually purchase their very own BS. A month is long adequate, no count what all of us says. they desire you to stay longer in simple terms so which you get greater exposure simply by fact they hire theory reform procedures in simple terms like cults do. stay domicile, bypass the park, artwork out, something yet brainwashing one hundred and one.

AA was founded, I understand, by a proctologist and a wire rope salesmen.
IMO, the '12 step program' is a complete load of c rap in that it requires the person to accept that alcohol is his 'god', i.e., it has complete control over him.
Bullsh!
BTW, that opinion goes for ANY 12 step program.
it's all bullsh.
