She found out about The Nightmare Before Christmas 3D about a week ago. Since then she's been talking non-stop about it... she's very excited. I told her we should wait for it on DVD but she really wanted to see it in the theater. This morning she bought 4 tickets, for me and her and her parents.

I never told her that 3D movies give me extremely bad headaches that last about a week, it's a bit of obscure information that never really came up. I've seen two 3D movies before; the first, The Muppets something or other. It was a 10 minute short that pretty much existed simply to showcase the technology. After viewing it I had a killer headache for a week. Then it was time for Terminator 3D, another 10 minute short. Chalking up my first headache to chance, I gave it another shot, but it wasn't chance, I had another headache. So now she expects me to go see this movie, and it's about 10 times as long as the other 3D movies that effected me so badly.

What's the best way to decline?

She loves you, she'd understand.

Thank her for buying the tickets, but say, "Honey, I know you really want to go and see this, and I would love to go with you, BUT... I get these week long headaches." Then offer to meet up with her and her parents after the movie to get a bite to eat and talk about the movie.

This one exists as a post conversion by ILM (the star wars people) and is a single 2D image with the glasses off.

you should be safe depending on how strong a job ILM did with disney's film. now if she asked you to do a fully CGI film in 3D, what you're looking at with the glasses off is motion blur which will give you a headache. and that's not safe to look at in stereo as it can cause seasickness in addition to the headaches.

if you have a 3D TV+3D BD player+glasses+cables at HDMI 1.4 or higher, you can play that in your own home. get a passive display, these cause the least amount of focal damage. and the format you would have had is passive glasses format, they are in polarized filters to compensate for the lower light loss which is safer than active glass.

unless the theater showing it is not a RealD 3D theater, and if its an ExpandD 3D theater. you will have the headaches.

have you been exposed to the ExpandD system at all? and could that be a possible trigger for the headaches.

You may as well be honest, since you're marrying this person, right? It's better that than you spent the next 50 or 60 years of your life finding ways out of 3D movies! Just tell her honestly, and suggest an alternate activity, or someone else who she can take.

Don't beat around the bush. Tell her about the horrific headaches caused by the other 2 movies. She will understand and if you don't tell her and keep things honest then you will be beating around the bush with her always. Someday you may come to hate her for that. Be honest.

Just be truthful with her, your excuse is legit. Suggest she take a girlfriend instead, explain that you don't want to ruin her evening and offer to meet them after the movie for a coffee.

Just explain to her the situation. If she's not understanding, do you really want to be with her?
