Get them a Kitchen Aid mixer. They come in all types of colors to match any kitchen and you can also buy many attachments for it. They are very durable and last forever. I got one (in red) for a wedding gift and nearly cried I was so excited! They usually cost about $300.00 without all of the accessories. Some other ideas... You could always give them a gift certificate to Home Depot or Dillard's. Another good idea is a nice bar-b-cue pit. That is something people might not register for that would be expensive. A share of stock in a profitable company would be a really neat idea too! Whatever you decide I am sure they will be happy with it. Good luck!
P.S. I don't know how much gas costs where you are, but here it is very expensive. A needed and funny gift would be a bunch of gas cards! You could spend as much as you wanted to on them and you know they will be used. I am getting married in two weeks and I would love this gift!

Very Expensive and Unique...I recommend getting them a Vermont Wish Bowl (http://www.wishbowl.com/). Unfortunately the website is currently down. So you might want to try in a little while. These are hand painted bowls (bowls made from a Vermont tree). Hand painted by a local artist in Vermont. There are 4 styles: Natural, Leaves, Clouds, and Spiral. I bought 2 spiral bowls as a wedding gift for 2 different couples. Basically the bowls have a very nice painted background (continues onto the back side of the bowl) and onto of the background wishes such as love...happiness...joy...etc... are painted in a swirl pattern down into the center of the bowl. Then on the back of the bowl can be personalized with the couples name, wedding date, and a short message from you. On one of mine I added "Wishing you happily ever after..." Love, me and my husband.
Both couples I gave these to just loved them to death!!! One is on display on an end table and the other one is hung up on a wall with the bottom side facing out.
No Matter what you get them I recommend getting them something personalized with their name and wedding date on it. A silver photo album, silver picture frame, etc...things like this can be found at Red Envelope, Things Remembered, etc...
Good luck on gift hunting.

Adult games.... Orrrr a cute little marriage book. This one is cheap and you can order it. Its called the love Dare. Rather your marriage is on its end or strong and healthy, the love dare pushes the couples to appreciate each other more and teaches them what marriage is all about. Its in the form of a journal. itll give you a short passage, a dare and then you do that dare with your husband or wife and when its done you write down the results of that dare in the book. It fixed my mom and dad's marriage when they were about to divorce and then for good marriages it brings the couple even closer. Its a wonderful gift and I got one and Ima use mines one day too

Cash or gift cards are always a great gift. That way the couple can get whatever else they need. And it'll definitely save you time on having to search their registry, etc.

Cash. It might sound tacky, but it's what most newlyweds need more than anything. If you're not comfortable with giving money, then anything from their gift registries or gift cards are both good options.

For very expensive, check the registry for their china pattern. Those suckers are expensive! Crystal, silver flatware, etc... Something that they'll be hopefully keeping forever.

a paid for car or house is always great. if they are in an apartment, pay up some of their rent, if in a house, home depot gift cards are good esp if it's an older house. My husband's parents paid for new hardwood floors throughout our house (my daughter has respiratory probs and carpet aggravates it). I love extravagant stuff, but practicality wins out everytime.

if you are wanting to buy a gift look at where they are/ were registered..a good fall back is towels, you can never have enough bath towels..find out what colors their bathroom is and get a full set ( body towel, hand towel and washcloth) for each..You can really make it fun and alternate the colors-- like if they have blue and gray do a blue body towel, gray hand towel, blue washcloth then do the opposite for the other person.

Depending upon your budget, give them something they will cherish their whole life and remember you. Something like sponsor their honeymoon.... if the budget is lower than that.... wrist watches for both, a piece of jewelery, etc..... and maybe if it's even lower then .... some linen, electrical gadget, etc.... and if it's very-2 low, then a rose flower will do too -- haven't you heard "Flowers can say it better than words".
