I can only think of 'lament' but that is certainly not correct.... but i think it's similar. what's the word?

Laminate? Layered?

Laminate if you are creating a composite material glued together in many layers. This is like plywood.
In geology it would be sediments that go to the bottom in layers and then are compacted into rock. First it becomes shale, and then slate.
