Present public school systems offer:

Backpacks full of books weighing a ton even though we have computers. Bullies.
Ineffective administrators. Ineffective rules.
Overcrowded classrooms. Gangs. Guns.
Warped socialization. Illiteracy. Social promotion.

No we shouldn't. Why would you even suggest this? Do you honestly think anyone would be better off without schooling? Giving up is not a good solution to any problem, and certainly not one as important as providing education to the people.

Like I said, giving up is no solution to any of those things. If you think people are illiterate with public schools, how in the world do you expect them to be literate without them?

What should be dissolved is "compulsory" education and then the blanket approach to learning that schools do, the system doesn't need to be done away with, it needs to be overhauled in a major way. Not everyone can afford private school and not everyone wants to homeschool or can homeschool their children.

Seeing how the MAJORITY of public educated children fall in the average category that means a lot children are not learning in a way that is beneficial to them. Perhaps they are hands on learners and very intelligent but because of how public schools are forced to teach, the child is then labled "behind or slow". Teachers should be allowed to be creative, children should have choices of what they want to learn and how they want to learn it. All they need are loving adults who are willing to give their time to them. How many more children would love science and line the doors to learn if they could be with a science teacher that specializes in what the child is interested in? What about a child who loves ancient history who is able to be with an adult or teacher who specializes in an era that the child loves as well. Can you imagine how a new found love of learning would explode? I can, but sadly, that will probably never happen.

I recommend John Holt books and John Taylor Gotto's "Dumbing Us Down" all of those books have great ideas for how to revamp the school systems, and they,IMHO are awesome ones.

My DH's opinion is that any family making $75k or more would have the option of a "free" public education of their choice (alternative, charter, etc. schools) and that in doing so it would be less student to teacher ratio. Anyone making more than that should have to either home educate or pay for some kind of private school. Just an idea.

Heck, NO!!
Make requests and bring attention to the problems that exist.
But bring an end to public education that is the only way many people can ever advance in the world would be a tragedy.

You must not have a public school education...The public school system has higher average educational ratings than any parochial or catholic shool system. I'm not talking about single schools, OR any specific part of any state. That is over-all. Plus there are unneccessary requirements from catholic, or parochial schools. How would many people pay for their education??? perhaps you should check the possible answers before asking a question like that!!!! Most people would rather learn REAL subjects like SCIENCE, than being forced to take a fantasy class like religion....IN ESSENCE THE CATHOLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM SHOULD BE DISBANDED. In fact, all religious schooling should be out right banned from this planet.

Yes, that's a great plan!
No, you idiot, we should CHANGE the public school system. We cannot dissolve it, do you want generations of children growing up uneducated? That is a horrible idea. When something doesn't work, you FIX it, you don't trash the entire concept.

This is a serious overgeneralization. There are many excellent public schools.

well - if you are a product of it and that is what you think - then I would say yes - however - if you are a product of a private school education or home schooling - I would say you are proof of why we need it - LOL
