I'm asking because I have 2 pairs of brother and sister. One pair is 11 months old one pair is 5months old. The older male, will on command: sit, laydown, shake a paw, give kiss, jump up on a chair and roll over (but only half way, he likes his belly rubbed). The female will sit, but that is it.
The little boy has already learnt to sit, lay down and he willl lift his paw but has not yet learnt to shake a paw. The girl will sit but not showing much promise on the rest.
The boys really enjoy doing tricks for the treats I buy from the vet.
The girs like to watch and wait for their treats after we are finished.
Anyone else have observations on queens and toms.

I should add that both older cats come to their names and the little ones recognize their names, but not too quick to come, yet. We have always called our cats by name, except one we had who was deaf. He learnt to came to a flashing light.
I think that most cats can be trained to some extent, the cats on TV are taught to preform. I've heard that if you withhold food and make sure they are hungry they all can learn. I could never do that, Iove my babies.

Interesting.. from what I've read, I've known cats to be very selective as to what they'll do and what they wont do. It's been proven that they are extremely smart only what some people believe to be seen as an un-trianable cat is really just a cat with attitude. Did that make sense? anyway, I have two females, both sisters. One of them behaves very much in the way your male cats. She will do what I've taught her to plus she'll come to me on demand if I call her name. The other one, lets just say she's the queen of the house. lol.. I know she sees the other getting treats and the praise but she's just not interested. She just wants her share of treats and to be left alone. So that's what I think is going on with your females.

I've had 4 cats in my life: 3 female and 1 male. I noticed that they all had such different personalities. Here are my observations:
The first cat was a female, she was an independent hunter, didn't care too much to be indoors. The second female cat liked to act like a dog... she would go for walks with me outside (without a leash) and she would fetch small balls. The third female cat is another loner. She just sleeps in the sun and begs for treats without deserving them. The fourth cat was a male. He loved attention so he would come on command, but he would never work or do tricks for his treats.
I never attributed their behavior due to their gender, I just thought it was their personality.

Well, perhaps the males being older has something to do with it.
A few years back I had a female cat named Carmen. She was sooo intelligent I swear she understood everything I ever said to her. She would give me 'kitty kisses' when I asked for them... I know it's really scent marking but I think it meant more to the two of us. If there was a bird outside I could point at the window and say "Go look out the window" and she would run right over and find the bird and watch it. When it was getting to be bed time I would look at her and ask "Go to bed and cuddle?" - she would run into the bedroom, jump up on the bed and wait to lay next to me with her little chin resting on the back of my hand. She, unfortunatley, got cancer in her mouth and went from 7 lbs. to 3 lbs. in a matter of months and there was nothing that could be done. I sat down in front of her in my hallway and began to explain what was about to happen and explained that the vet nor I could do anything more for her and that she would be going to a better place where God would take care of her until I arrived. She looked right at me as I explained with tears streaming down my face. I said "I wish there was some way you could let me know if I was doing the right thing"-- and she got up and gave me kitty kisses right across my cheek. D*mn, I miss that cat! Excuse me please, I must go compose myself...............

Some cats are more independant than others. Now you seem to think that the male cats are smarter because they do tricks for their treat. The female cats DO NOTHING and still get their treats. Who is smarter? The cats that work for it, or the cats that get a free ride?

You have some smart cats!! Most cats wont perform "tricks" although, all of my cats (male AND female) do the same thing for a treat (stand on back legs & meow).
Male cats tend to be more attentive, as most females have to do things on their own terms. Male cats are also friendlier.

They aren't smarter. They tend to be more obedient though. Females can be more sneaky.
My female cat is the one always getting into trouble by jumping up on things she knows she isn't alowed to. Then male is more docile and obedient. However, the cunniness of the female when she is being mischevious makes me think she is actually the bright one.

Ive owned many cats over the years and i must admit male cats seem to be more friendly towards their owners. Im not certain if friendly is exactly the word, but they seem to seek attention from you more. Females, they tend to want to be their own cat- feed me and leave me be. I dont think its that one is smarter than the other.
(although us guys are smarter than girls -just kidding ladies)

I think it has more to do with the personalities of the individual cats. Some cats are more independent; some are more aloof; some are like dogs who don't mind playing up to humans for treats.

I think it is just that you were blessed with some extremely intelligent kitties. I don't think sex plays a part.
You should get a job training animals because anyone that can train a CAT to do all of those things DEFINITELY has a GIFT!!!
